The state of Maryland played a significant role in the formation of the United States of America.  Having been the site of many important historical events, such as the War of 1812 and the development of the railroad system, Maryland is very much attuned to the past.  For this reason, it is no surprise that Maryland has many legends of ghosts and paranormal activity.  Tales of the strange and mysterious abound all throughout the state of Maryland.

One of Maryland?€?s many haunted locations is the Old Western Burial Ground, which is located in Baltimore.  Although the cemetery is not well known, it is the resting place of many notable figures, including Edgar Allan Poe.  According to legend, Poe supposedly haunts the cemetery, and is often seen by his grave side and within the church?€?s catacombs.  Many visitors to the cemetery have also witnessed cold spots, whispering voices, and the feeling of being touched.  

The Old Western Burial Ground is also the site of a mysterious annual activity.  Every year, witnesses describe seeing a figure dressed completely in black, wearing a fedora and scarf to hide his face.  Carrying a walking stick, the mysterious figure places cognac and roses on Poe?€?s grave, only to complete the ritual again the next year.  Even though the man in black has reportedly completed the ritual since 1949 and has been seen by several people, the man?€?s identity is still a mystery.

In Maryland, Ellicott City is known for having more than its fair share of ghosts.  Located in Ellicott City, the Lilburn Mansion is often recognized as the most famous haunted house in Maryland.  Built in 1857, the house was originally owned by a wealthy businessman, Henry Richard Hazelhurst.  While living in the house, Hazelhurst lost his wife and children as the result of several tragic occurrences.  In 1923, after Hazelhurst?€?s own death, the Maginnis family moved into the home and almost immediately began to experience strange phenomena.  The sound of footsteps that the family often heard throughout the house was attributed to the ghost of the original owner?€?s daughter who died during childbirth.  

After a fire within the home, the Maginnis replaced the tower of the home, which caused the paranormal activity to increase.  Despite several changes in ownership, the ghostly activity was still being reported.  During the 1960's, the new family in the home reported hearing the sound of footsteps, witnessing chandeliers moving for no reason, and being unable to keep the windows in the tower closed.  Throughout the years, residents in the home have experienced a variety of paranormal activity, including the sound of children crying, the smell of cigar smoke, and even the sight of ghostly apparitions.

Mount Saint Mary?€?s College and Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland is reportedly haunted by many spirits.  One of the spirits is believed to be a former president of the college.  Many people have witnessed the president?€?s ghost wandering throughout campus and blending in with students and faculty.  Often, the ghost follows groups of students as they walk to and from class.  

A less friendly ghost haunts the residence hall of Mount Saint Mary?€?s College.  A priest of the college moved out after he experienced an unseen energy that scattered objects across the room and turned the lights off and on.  Later, another priest also decided to leave the room after his cat began to hiss at a dark presence in the room and even began to hide beneath the bed.  After feeling the unwelcome presence himself, the priest too moved out.  Reportedly, the room currently remains unoccupied.

In Frederick, Maryland, the Tyler-Spite House has long been plagued by ghostly activity.  One hundred years after being built, both the owner and visitors to the home witnessed strange occurrences.  The activity increased after the home was converted into apartments.  Many unusual reports came from an artist, Marie Theresa Fernandes.  Fernandes claimed that every night at the same time, she would awaken to discover that a man was standing at the foot of her bed.  She described the figure as having long hair and bony fingers.  After investigating the attic located adjacent to her room, Fernandes found that she was completely alone.  The Tyler-Spite House now serves as a bed and breakfast.

Maryland is the site of many haunted locations, which can be found all throughout the state.  The presence of these locations serves as a reminder of how the past can have a long-lasting impact on the present.
