The Great Lakes have historically been the seen for eerie sightings.  Along the lakes, there are quite a few old lighthouses.  You can take a trip to any old lighthouse and feel the uncanny energy. Ghost hunters and enthusiasts alike can attest to the abundance of stories hovering over these beacons.  

One lighthouse in particular, the tower of Michigan¡¯s old Saginaw River Light is more than just an old place with ghostly possibilities.  This lighthouse has a very ghostly reputation, with a historic tale to make it even more eerie. There are a few people who believe that an old lighthouse keeper who died in the building still keeps vigilance over his post.  Before his passing, he told his family to keep the light shining, even after his death. They did just that.  When the Coast Guard took over the lights, they began reporting abnormal noises, such the sound of boots going up the iron staircase.

The Presque Isle Light near Alpena is another lighthouse filled with a terrifying tale involving a lighthouse keeper of old. Reportedly, his wife bore an unbearable loneliness due to her husband¡¯s long hours at the light house.  According to one tale, she went insane and her husband imprisoned her in a cell below the lighthouse. She supposedly died in that very cell while letting out the screams of a madwoman. Other people say that the husband did not incarcerate his wife, but that, in her insanity, she murdered her husband.  Regardless of whether either tale is true, many people say that they can still hear her screams.

While taking a trip to one of these lighthouses, be sure to keep an eye on the water.  There have been several reports of phantom ships sailing the lakes near the shores of Michigan.  One such ship, Erie Board of Trade, has been spotted in Saginaw Bay. According to legend, when the crew were in port, they told the story of one of their crewmates who had fallen to his death after having gone up the main mast to the boatswain¡¯s chair.  Afterward, the crew reported seeing his ghost in various places onboard the ship.  After having told their tale to the people on shore, the ship set sail for its next and last voyage.  The ship was never seen again, at least not as it was when it deported the port. Reportedly, the ship sank approximately fifteen miles west of Deer Park, which is located on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  

Overall, there are countless places in Michigan plagued with horrifying and ghostly stories.  Before trekking out to find these places, you can find a plethora of books and maps that will give you the stories and the directions to the places.  There are some widely known haunted places, such as Jackson Reynolds Cemetery, Traverse City Bowers Harbor Inn, Grand Rapids Michigan Bell Telephone Company, and the Flint Cornwall building.  You can find out about these haunted places by asking tour offices or simply by asking the locals.
