Austin is one of those cities that you visit and just fall in love with.  To this day, Austin remains one of those dichotomous cities that is laid-back on one hand and very professional and business-oriented on the other. You can go into one of the fancier restaurants in town and see a group of people dressed in sandals and shorts next to a table of businessmen in suits and ties. There are a multitude of reasons to visit Austin, including the fact that it is the capital of Texas, the fact that it is considered the live music capital of the world, and the fact that it boasts tons of local restaurants that help ¡°Keep Austin Weird.¡± Here is a guide to some of the best local restaurants Austin has to offer.

* I could never start off a list of best Austin restaurants without first mentioning my favorite, Magnolia Caf¨¦ located on 2304 Lake Austin Boulevard. Open 24 hours, 7 days a week, this caf¨¦ is a second-home for college students looking for something to munch after a night of clubbing, Austin athletes looking for a bite to eat after a 5k, marathon or jog around Town Lake and any out-of-towner looking to dine where the locals do. Before you order your meal, start off with the Mag Queso, a dip made of cheese, avocados and salsa and served with tortilla chips. Don¡¯t be embarrassed to hand back a bowl that has been licked clean. The menu offers something for everybody, including the vegetarian and the die-hard meat-eater. Breakfast, especially the huge buttermilk pancakes, is a local favorite any time of the day. 

* If you want one of the best Mexican martinis ever made, head on over to Trudy¡¯s Restaurant and Bar located at 409 West 30th Street, only a few blocks from the University of Texas campus. Their happy hours are packed with Austin locals and their Tex-Mex food is superb. If you want a sample of everything and are mainly headed over for happy hour, get the Botana sampler. My own personal favorite: the tortilla chip-crusted fish tacos with the special sauce. Trust me when I say that this dish is like fish heaven on earth.

* Want a picture-perfect view of the Lake Travis at sunset? Go over to the Oasis on 6550 Comanche Trail and find a spot on one of the forty outdoor decks it offers. Specializing in a variety of foods including your basic Tex-Mex and chicken fried steaks, Oasis is a fantastic place to start your week off in Austin. Be sure to get there early to get a good table to catch the sunset.

* If burgers are more up your alley, you won¡¯t find a better burger than the one you will have at Fran¡¯s Hamburgers. Located on 1822 South Congress, this restaurant will take you back to a different era. This location which used to be an old-time drive-in style restaurant has red and white checkered floors and very little decoration, but once you try the fare, you will not care if you ate on a cardboard box. The usual burger joint food is available, including fries, onion rings and shakes and you will not be disappointed by anything. 

* My husband and had our first taste of Indian food here in Austin at the acclaimed Clay Pit, located at 1601 Guadalupe. After having had Indian food from other restaurants in town, Clay Pit is, hands down, the reigning winner. Start the meal off with some stuffed naan (Aloo Naan is, by far, my favorite) and be sure to end it with some kheer, which is an Indian rice pudding that you must try at least once (or a hundred times!) in your life.

* Every once in a while, I need to get my sushi fix and the only place I will go for it in Austin is Seoul Restaurant and Sushi Bar on 6400 South First Street. If a friend had not turned me on to this dining spot a few years back, I might never have tried it since its location is a bit far from the normal Austin hubbub. The sushi, unlike most other sushi restaurants I have gone to, is reasonably priced and if you have a friend who is not a sushi fan, their extensive menu has much to offer for those not willing to partake in raw fish.

* For those whose long for fresh ingredients, nothing is fresher than the food at Eastside Caf¨¦, located on 2113 Manor Road. After all, the caf¨¦ has its own vegetable and herb garden to pick from. The restaurant has been converted from a small house, giving it a cozy and romantic feel (perfect for first dates), and the food is phenomenal. Must-haves include their baked brie with apple chutney and any one of their fresh and tasty salads.
