If you have never been to Corpus Christi located in the southern region of Texas, then you are missing out. They don¡¯t call it ¡°The Sparkling City By The Sea¡± for nothing. Spring breakers make their yearly trek down here to bask and frolic on the beaches, while fishers come down to catch some fresh seafood. Myself? In addition to visiting Corpus quite often to see my husband¡¯s family and my sister and her family, I go down to get some of the best Tex-Mex food in all of Texas. If you plan on visiting Corpus in the near future, instead of shelling out your money at the chain restaurants off the highway, visit one of these great local restaurants.

* A friend took us to Kiko¡¯s Mexican Food Restaurant (5514 Everhart Road) a few years back proclaiming that it was, by far, the best Mexican food ever made. Hailing from San Antonio, home of Tex-Mex, I thought this was a pretty bold statement to make. As I usually do in new Mexican restaurants, I ordered the cheese enchiladas and was in heaven. Very few Mexican restaurants get all of the basics (rice, beans, tortillas) right. Either the rice will be too mushy or the beans will have no taste or the tortillas will taste store-bought, but Kiko¡¯s pulls everything together perfectly. Be prepared to wait for a seat, since Kiko¡¯s is extremely popular with the locals, especially on Fridays and Saturdays.

* Some of the best Mexican restaurants you will find in Corpus are little hole-in-the-walls. One such restaurant that surpasses most others is Hi-Ho Restaurant on 3703 Morgan Avenue. I highly recommend joining the locals for an inexpensive and delicious breakfast on the weekend. Anything you order will be good, but the tortillas are divine. My grandmother and my mother both make delicious homemade tortillas, and Hi-Ho is the closest to them I¡¯ve ever tasted.

* This list would not be complete without a restaurant where you can enjoy fresh seafood. Ask most locals and they will point you straight to Water Street Seafood Company and Oyster Bar (309 North Water Street). Their menu is extensive with anything from fresh oysters on the half shell to Cajun-inspired shrimp po¡¯ boys and shrimp enchiladas. Located in beautiful downtown Corpus Christi, the Water Street restaurant is located just a few blocks from the bay, so enjoy a leisurely or romantic walk on the bayfront after dinner. 

* Feeling like a light lunch of salad and a sandwich? Then head on over to Jezebelle¡¯s at the Art Center on 100 North Shoreline Road. This cozy little restaurant has spectacular views of the bay and offers delicious gourmet salads, soups and sandwiches. Once you are done eating, visit one of the ever-changing exhibits in the art center that features the work of local artists as well as a gift shop. 

* Sometimes you just feel like having something simple and delicious like a hamburger. I am not the biggest hamburger eater in the world, but when my mother-in-law took me to Wallbanger¡¯s (4102 South Staples Road) one weekend we were in town, I about died and went to ground beef heaven. Wallbanger¡¯s, unlike many hamburger joints, has a wide selection from which to choose from. You choose the size of your burger and then top it with any and all toppings you want. They even have a well-stocked salad bar for those watching their waistlines. My favorite menu item is the mini burger meal. These are four palm-sized hamburgers that you can eat or share, but they are cooked to perfection. If you don¡¯t like burgers, there are plenty of other items from which too choose from, all at great prices.
