Everybody needs to get away from the tension and stress of the daily routine from time to time. One of the best ways we can accomplish a true getaway is by taking a backpacking trip. The combination of fresh air, exercise, and plenty of time to think is hard to beat.
As is true with any type of vacation or planned activity, there is an element of risk. Backpacking is no exception. Accidents can happen. Medical treatment may be required. Unexpected emergencies could arise. The good news is that any backpacker can ease worries about the unknown by simply obtaining backpacking travel insurance. Policies are available to anyone that meets the health requirements specified by the provider, and is generally very affordable.
Unfortunately, people who would not think of living without health, auto, or home owners insurance may strap on a backpack and hit the open road, never giving a thought to how much good sense it makes to get backpacking travel insurance.
Here are some reasons why you should consider getting backpacking coverage.
1. Peace of mind. The whole idea of getting away is just that. You want to leave the regular world behind for a time and refresh yourself. There is no time for you to waste thinking about what you will have to do should this or that situation arise. Get the coverage that is right for your trip, and spend your time enjoying, not strategizing. By obtaining coverage that is unique to the trip you are planning, you can rest easy about what will happen should the unexpected happen.
2. It¡¯s easy, convenient, and cost effective. A number of companies offering backpacking travel insurance will accept an online application, and an electronic payment for the premium. Depending on the degree of coverage you want need; your cost can be as little as $1.00 US per day.
3. You know you are covered, one way or another. Okay, you already have medical coverage, and that should be good enough, right? Maybe it is, maybe it isn¡¯t. Your regular health insurance policy may not completely cover you in all places and all circumstances. Make sure you know what is and is not covered by your group or individual health coverage. Then compare that coverage with what you can get with a short term backpacking policy.
While you have that health insurance policy out, take a look at what type of geographical limitations are involved with your coverage. Does your service provider assure you will have at least partial coverage anywhere in your country? What if your trip is taking you to other countries? Do you still have coverage? Chances are you either have no coverage outside your home country, or you have greatly reduced benefits. Backpacking travel insurance is available for coverage anywhere in the world. In cases where your health insurance will cover you at least partially, your backpacking medical coverage can act to cover the amounts not paid by your health provider.
4. Play at will. Many backpacking policies contain a clause that will cover what is referred to as hazardous activities. Generally speaking, this would cover a number of specified sporting activities, provided the activities were not job related or otherwise professional in nature. Again, this may be an area where there are limitations within your general health coverage. This added dimension of coverage is especially helpful if your backpacking trip is an extended one, and you plan on trying something fun and different along the way.
5. If you get stuck, you are not really stuck. Travel delays can derail your backpacking adventure. Not only are they disappointing, they can also be expensive. If you¡¯ve made non-refundable deposits on lodging and other amenities and suddenly have to change your itinerary, you are usually out of luck. A travel delay clause in your backpacking insurance coverage will at least allow you to recoup a part, if not all, the losses.
6. Sticky fingers won¡¯t ruin your trip. We don¡¯t like to talk about it, but there is a chance you will be the victim of a robbery. When that happens, you may need to replace necessities in a hurry in order to continue with your trip. Backpacking travel insurance can come in handy in the event of theft. Funds to replace personal items, cash, and travel documents quickly will help take some of the sting out of a bad experience.
As is true with any type of purchase, you should do your research. This approach is no less important when searching for the right provider and coverage to ensure your trip is an enjoyable one. Identify at least four different providers that offer backpacking travel insurance and compare their pricing and various components. Make sure the company you choose will provide you with coverage that gives you the security needed to make your backpacking trip an unqualified success. Then pack up and hit the trail. You deserve it. |
