Greenland is a land characterized by harsh and extreme climates with a primary economy based on hunting and fishing.  Although, in recent years it has found itself in an increase of eco-tourism as people around the world discover the hidden treasure of this part of the Arctic Circle.  Nature enthusiasts will thrive in Greenland with such activities as kayaking, canoeing, wildlife sightseeing and glacier cruises.  However, for the less adventuresome there are tours of the cities, villages and homes of Greenland and a full, internationally approved 18-hole golf course.  

TOURS

Tours can be booked that combine nature, history and culture.  One popular tour is the ¡°Ilulissat Greenland Tour: Town of Icebergs.¡±  This tour takes place from June 1st through August 31st on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.  The tour leaves Copenhagen, Denmark and the flight to Kangerlussuag is 5 hours.  The tour involves a stay in Kangerlussuag and then a short flight to Ilulissat for the remainder of the tour. The stay in Kangerlussuag will include a historical and modern tour of town, an Ice Cap tour with a barbecue, wildlife sightings and a round of arctic golf.  The stay in Ilulissat involves an historical city walk through the original Danish settlements (lunch included), the Icebergs of Sermermiut where tourists will view both flowers and icebergs, hunter¡¯s settlement of Oqaitsut/Rodebay (population 80), midnight glacier cruise, helicopter tour of the ice cap, a visit to the home of a Greenland resident to enjoy a cup of ¡°Coffee-Mik¡± (a cup of coffee traditionally offered to all visitors.) and finally the calving glaciers.  Calving is the term used for when an iceberg chunk breaks off and falls into the sea, which creates a new iceberg.  

SPORTS

For those that are physically and mentally challenged there is any number of activities to be found.  Hiking, mountaineering and kayaking are among the top on the list.  Hiking usually takes places on old dogsled routes that crisscross the country.  The Inuits invented Kayaking and it is a favorite sport among residents and tourists alike.  A mountaineer can find their fill of mountains to climb and a must for any mountaineer is a descent into the belly of the Ice Cap.  But, for first-timers there are gentler ascents to be found as well.  Dog sledding trips can be arranged and last anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks.  Other outdoor enthusiasts can have their fill of cross-country skiing.  For the sportsman, fishing and hunting trips can be arranged but regulations can be strict regarding what can be hunted, when it can be hunted and what can be taken out of the country.

TOWNS

Other great places to visit are:  

Disko Bay:  notably this is ¡°Big ¡®Berg¡± country with some of the biggest icebergs weighing in at 7 million tons.  Disko Bay has stunning midnight suns which highlight the icebergs beautifully and hiking prospects are abundant  Towns in Disko Bay include:  Aasiaat, renowned for leather crafting; Qasigiannguit with a museum of relics from the Sasqqaq period; and Qeqertarsuaq has whaling paraphernalia and the Arctic Research Museum.

Kulusuk:  this is a small island off the coast of Greenland.  It does have an international airport, despite its tiny size, and frequent flights from Reykjavik make it a perfect place for day-trips.  Kulusuk is virtually un-tainted by technology and most of its community thrives on hunting.  This tiny village clings to the rocky island above a sparkling sea of icebergs with a backdrop of dramatic mountain peaks.  Informal ¡°qajaq¡± (dancing) demonstrations are often scheduled by the locals, unless they decide hunting is more favorable that day.  Kulusuk is awe-inspiring in both its beauty and its haunting qualities.  The airport is a 40-minute walk from the village; along the way visit the hauntingly beautiful cemetery or walk amongst the arctic flowers and glacier buttercups before hiking straight up a hill to see an eerie mountain lake.  

Qaqortoq:  this village boasts a population of 3500 and sits among the tip of the peninsula in the southern part of Greenland.  This is a harbor town built amongst the site of Hans Egede¡¯s search for lost colonists.  Their prize possession is the town square fountain, the only one in Greenland, with the names of town burghers (past and present) in brass letters on the base.  The museum is also worth a trip; it is one of Greenland¡¯s finest museums and exhibits much of Greenland¡¯s culture.  While in Qaqortoq you must also visit the Hvalsey ruins.  These are the most extensive and best preserved Norse ruins in Greenland.

Upernavik:  if you are prone to the cold weather, visit Upernavik.  This is the northernmost ferry stop in Greenland and the average summer temperature sits at around 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Greenland¡¯s oldest museum, The Old Town Museum, has information and history of many explorers and a lot of artifacts of the past culture of Greenland.  For the adventurous type there is a 3-hour hike from Upernavik¡¯s highest peak, Innuusuussuaq, to the northern tip, Naajarsuit in which you will be taken through a magical landscape of brilliantly colored rocks and amazing acoustics.
