¡°April showers bring...¡± none other than difficulties to your travel plans during the month of April. The temptation is to plan a cool-weather outdoor event, but one never knows if it will get rained out. The last thing anyone needs is to use their vacation to travel the world in a rain jacket and goulashes! Here are a few tips for choosing a creative and unique travel destination for the month of April that will work for you-rain or shine.
Plan a camping trip. Instead of setting the date well in advance and taking the time off from work, tentatively plan a weekend trip ¨C but make it flexible and weather dependant. After all, especially if you¡¯re traveling with children, it¡¯s hard can¡¯t take a week off from school just before exam and summertime. A weekend camping trip is the perfect retreat ¨C right before the students¡¯ crunch time and just as the warm weather starts to creep into ecosystem.
Combine your camping trip with a canoe, biking, or hiking trip to add a little flavor and extra activity to your weekend. Almost every national park has some sort of canoeing opportunity. Consult the park¡¯s Forest Ranger station or search online for the rates and best opportunities. In most cases, the park will have either a lake or a river. (When there is a river involved, make sure that there is someone at the opposite end of your trip to pick up both you and the canoe to return you to the starting point!)
Biking is a popular springtime activity. Whether you prefer mountain biking or roadside biking, pack along some snacks, maybe a picnic lunch and take off. Road bikers: visit some small communities along your trip. Take the backroads and some extra cash and plan to stop at the smallest diner you come across. Park your bikes and take a look at the local art fairs that begin in the month of April. Read the town¡¯s newspaper for the latest information about what the local bands and venues are putting on. In many ways, your biking trip will be as much a cultural as it is a physical activity.
Shoppers: spend some time shopping for summer clothes and items. Plan to spend a weekend at a nearby outlet mall or even a big city shopping mecca that you¡¯ve been dying to see. April is the perfect month to gear up and stock that closet with summer fun (and, ladies, it¡¯s a fact that you won¡¯t lose anymore weight before swimsuit season at this point, so go ahead and clad that body for your upcoming beach trip.) Pick out decorations for your home and patio, buy some outdoor and indoor plants and go to work suiting your living environment for the sunny summer months.
For another taste of small community, take a creativity retreat to a college town. Often over looked as vacation and travel destinations, college towns offer an odd melee of art, culture and nostalgia. Plan to head back to that place you went to school and wonder wander those old halls. Stop by the library and take in the students rushing to remember a semester¡¯s worth of information for their finals (you were that student once too!)
What¡¯s more: just about every college has April shows just before exams where students get to share (and sell) the projects they have been working on all year. Stop by the theater to see this year¡¯s drama production. Find out the schedule for music events and plan to stop by with a donation. Stock up your car with inexpensive student art (you can buy everything from ceramics to paintings to sculpture and more!)
Whatever your destination, the key to making April¡¯s vacation memorable is flexibility ¨C both in weather and in time. Good luck!
