Welcome to Philly, home of the cheesesteak sandwich, morning scrapple, and the ever-popular soft pretzel with mustard.  This is a town that knows how to eat, and for the informed visitor, Philadelphia can offer a great range of restaurants and dinner options. 

Food Carts: The original low-budget food option, food carts serve up surprisingly delicious food while you wait.  With everything from tacos to Chinese food, they're a great place to chow down while not spending a lot of dough.  For starters, there's the famous soft pretzel, available at tons of locations throughout the city and perfect for a snack during the day.  Try the various Chinese carts for a delicious fried noodle soup. Maybe you would like to track down the legendary Chicken Cart, which usually hangs out in University City, serving up their special sandwich with fried mozzarella sticks, french fries, and chicken strips all in the same French roll.  It is delicious, but definitely not for the health-conscious.

Cheesesteaks: As any visitor to Philly knows, you have to try an original Philly cheesesteak.  The two most popular competitors, Pat's and Gino's, are located right across the street from each other, and most Philly residents swear by one or the other.  Sample one of each if you're really feeling hungry, and decide for yourself!  The third cheesesteak place, one of the oldest in the city, is located right on South Street in the middle of the lively shopping district.  Though the line to order often stretches all the way around the building, the wait is well worth it.

Chinatown: Enter under the colorful carved gate, and you'll find yourself transported into a vibrant Asian community, the second largest in the USA.  Chinatown offers everything you can imagine and many foods you've never heard of.  Xe Lua, locally known as the Choo-Choo Train for the glowing neon train on the outside, serves up delicious Vietnamese food at some of the lowest prices in town.  Try the pho, the traditional beef and noodle soup, and just see if you can finish the whole bowl.  The restaurant also has a number of fresh fruit smoothies for dessert, from mango and coconut to the little-known durian and kumquat varieties.  Chinatown also offers a range of higher-priced restaurants such as the chic Penang, which serves a variety of spicy Malaysian dishes in a cool and modern environment.

Little Italy: Rivaling only New York in size, Philly's Little Italy is a slice of old Italian life, and comes with some of the best food outside of Sicily.  Try Maggiano's, a lively restaurant with great atmosphere, and check out the massive meatball sandwich, or one of the great pasta dishes.  For lunch, duck into one of the many delis and get a hoagie with layers of sliced mozzarella, prosciutto, and sweet ham.  

Sushi: There are a number of excellent sushi restaurants dotting the city, many of them unknown to outsiders.  The chic Ai restaurant, near South Street, has a hip feel and a great selection of interesting Japanese dishes.  For a more traditional experience, try Shiroi Hana, located in the middle of Center City.  Chat with the sushi chef, or sit back and enjoy the salty, seaweed soup called miso that comes with your meal.

Upscale: Philly also has its share of upscale and fancy restaurants for those looking to spend a little more money on a memorable meal.  Le Bec Fin, one of the city's most famous restaurants, serves up dining perfection every night with a gorgeous interior and a 5-star rating.  Nearby, former Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, has created a very trendy Japanese fusion restaurant where the emphasis is on presentation and the atmosphere is modern, yet friendly.
