The Golden Isles area of southeastern Georgia is a perfect resort vacation spot. Easily reachable from Interstate 95, these islands include St. Simons Island, Little St. Simons Island, Sea Island, and Jekyll Island.
When leaving the interstate to travel toward the islands, visitors will be thrilled to see the Marshes of Glynn, immortalized in poetry form by Sidney Lanier in 1878. Be prepared when traveling to this part of Georgia to see a lot of stunning Spanish moss draped over the trees as well.
With the warm year-round temperatures enjoyed in this region of the country, this is also a much desired spot for a winter retreat. Leaving the ice and snow of many sections of the country behind, a large number of winter vacationers find their way to the southern east coast and Georgia's Golden Isles. The average temperature in January is 60 and July finds a high temperature of 90 degrees. The average low occurs in January and is 43 degrees.
The G8 summit for world leaders was held at the exclusive resort of Sea Island in 2004. Sea Island is well known for its excellent golfing. You will be driving to Sea Island by way of a causeway from St. Simons Island.
Little St. Simons is a barrier island that is privately owned. Access to the breathtakingly beautiful Little St. Simons is only by boat. The island covers ten thousand acres. Horseback riding, hiking, golf, and the gorgeous beaches are other activities on this island. It is the perfect type of place for a honeymoon or a much needed stress-relieving vacation or getaway.
If traveling by private vehicle, take one of the Brunswick exits from I-95 to visit the islands. If you are flying, there is an airport in Brunswick. Plan to spend some time here if possible. Famous for the birthplace of the delicious Brunswick Stew, this historical town offers outstanding views of the fishing and leisure boats, the Atlantic Ocean, excellent antiques shopping, and memorable seafood meals (or that stew!) in many of the restaurants.
An activity in Brunswick that visitors may enjoy is a casino cruise that can be booked from the waterfront park in town. Another attraction, especially if this is a romantic vacation, may be taking your partner to see the Lovers' Oak Tree in Brunswick. You will be in good company because the Native American braves and their maidens met here long before this area was colonized. The tree has been living since the 12th century.
The first resident of St. Simons Island was the British general James Oglethorpe who settled here in the mid 17th century. The island was originally named San Simeon when discovered by the Spanish.
There are many activities to do on the largest of the Golden Isles, St. Simons Island. The usual resort town sports and water activities are available at this Atlantic Ocean resort getaway. The land area of St. Simons is sixteen and a half miles, but do not let that deter you because the island is brimming with activities. In addition to those sports and great golfing, some attractions include:
--Fort Frederica 每 The first military outpost in Georgia, built to stop invading Spanish coming from Florida
--Tree Spirits 每 Carved into some special trees on the island
--Atlantic Ocean and pier
--Coastal Center for the Arts
--St. Simons Lighthouse and Museum (Working lighthouse built in 1872)
--Bloody Marsh Battle Site 每 Site of a British victory over Spanish troops who landed here in 1742
--Christ Church Frederica 每 Built in 1884. The Wesley Brothers preached near this spot
--Marshes of Glynn
--Antebellum plantations
--Excellent golfing
--Gascoigne Bluff 每 Native American campground of days gone by. Oak timbers from here were used to build the USS Constitution ("Old Ironsides") in the late 18th century and the bluff's wood was also used in the building of the Brooklyn Bridge
--Trolley tours of the island
--Exceptional shopping at the pier area called "The Village"
--Many festivals, concerts, etc. throughout the year
Jekyll Island is also filled with history and things to do. Cotton was produced here in the past, but the island was most well known for becoming a private resort island for some of the wealthiest families in America in the late nineteenth century and turn of the century. Families including the Vanderbilts, Morgans, Astors, and Rockefellers enjoyed their private island and the mansions they built there for over fifty years.
Activities on Jekyll Island include the same water sports and resort activities as St. Simons offers. This island is now a National Historic Landmark. In addition, some things to see on Jekyll Island include:
--Jekyll Island Museum and Visitor Center
--Summer Waves Water Park
--Jekyll Island Golf Club and Indian Mound Golf Course
--Dolphin sighting tours
--Tidelands Nature Center
--Horse drawn carriage rides through historic district of the island
--Incredible sunrises from here as well as from all of the islands |
