Travelers are always looking for the best ways to save on their vacations, and one of the best ways is to save on hotel rates. But how does a savvy traveler find the best hotel rates available?

 First, the traveler will need to determine how many rooms are needed, and who will be staying in these rooms. Sometimes, hotels will give discounts for booking more than one room. Often, children under a certain age can stay free. 

If a traveler doesn¡¯t need a four-star hotel, he can look at the less expensive places. Most of these are still clean and comfortable ¡ª they just don¡¯t have all the amenities that a nicer hotel has. But even the four-star hotels do offer discounts occasionally. 

  Surveys have been done recently to see if those booking hotels over the Internet got better prices than those who booked over the phone. The results were interesting. Those who called the particular hotel in question tended to get better rates. However, those booking online tended to get better rates than those calling the national, toll-free numbers. In cases like this, comparison shopping is the only way to go. If nothing else, the Internet travel sites will give a traveler a ballpark idea of what hotels in that city are charging. Travel sites also usually charge a small (about $5) booking fee. However, this is per reservation, not per day, so the fee is a small price to pay for a really good rate.

  Travelers belonging to clubs like AAA also may get better rates and should always mention their membership whenever they call to make reservations. Those ages 55 and up often receive senior discounts, as well, so even well-preserved seniors shouldn¡¯t be shy about asking for them. Corporate discounts may also be available, so it never hurts to ask about those, either. It may be that, as long as someone shows his or her business card from any company, the rate is valid. 

  Internet booking is by far the most convenient way to reserve hotel rooms. No phone calls are necessary, and usually, only a credit card number is needed to guarantee the reservation. Travelers can print out their reservation confirmation paperwork and check in to the hotel with confidence that the reservation will be waiting on them. They can also compare rates among various sites online, and some search engine aids, such as SideStep, will compare rates at all web sites, and will present the best rates it finds. Most sites also include descriptions of the hotels, amenities and the rooms so a traveler can make a more informed decision about where to stay. Even if the traveler does not book the reservation through the Internet, he can call a hotel and make the reservation with a better idea of what the hotel is like. Most sites also include a map of the hotel¡¯s location so a traveler can tell whether it is convenient. 

  Some Internet travel sites, and travel agents, offer package deals. If a traveler is flying in, say, and needs a hotel and a car, there may be a substantial discount on the hotel room. When it is possible, booking all the elements of a trip at the same time may result in the traveler getting a much better rate on the hotel reservation than he ordinarily would. 

  Another Internet option that can net a good rate is bidding on a hotel room, or allowing a site to choose a room. Priceline and Hotwire are the two most popular Web sites for this option. At Priceline, a traveler chooses the dates he would like for a hotel reservation, chooses what ¡°star¡± level he wants and submits a per-night bid for a room. The Priceline people will then start contacting hotels and see if anyone is willing to reserve a room for that price. If one is, then the traveler¡¯s credit card is charged immediately and he is sent the details about the hotel. 

  At Hotwire, the traveler chooses the dates and hotel grade, and general location of the hotel. The Hotwire search engine then looks for hotels that will accept a lower-rate reservation and shows the traveler the best deals it could find. These are good for two hours. The traveler does not know which hotel he is choosing until he makes the reservation. His credit card is then charged for the full amount at that time. 

  These are good options if a traveler is certain he will be traveling on those days, and if he is willing to take a little risk in the hotel he gets. The downside to this is that, even if he cancels the reservation, his credit card is still charged for the full amount, whether he uses the reservation or not. He may also not get a hotel convenient to his travel route. So, the traveler can use these at his discretion.

  As with most things, comparison shopping is the way to get the best hotel rates. Booking rooms as far in advance as possible is also a good idea. Most Internet sites have the phone numbers of the particular hotels, so a traveler can easily call the hotel and ask for a better rate. Travelers should never be shy about asking for whatever discounts they might qualify for, and should always check around thoroughly before booking. An informed decision is always the wisest one.
