Downtown Baltimore has undergone a renaissance over the past two decades which has made the Inner Harbor area fun and family-friendly. Whether you¡¯re a local looking for a family outing or in town on vacation with the kids in tow, Baltimore offers many opportunities to entertain and even educate your children.
If the weather is cooperating, get a guided tour of downtown Baltimore and the harbor from both land and sea by taking the highly popular Duck tour that features amphibious vehicles. The tours start on land and offer a highlight tour of the downtown area, then head to the water for a tour of the harbor area adjacent to downtown Baltimore and the Fells Point area. The tour is kid-friendly, and includes duck-shaped noisemakers that kids absolutely love. For older kids, try the fells Point Ghost Tour, which features a walking tour of the area¡¯s purportedly haunted establishments.
For an entertaining day with an educational twist, check out Port Discover, the kid-oriented museum located at the Power Plant pavilion. Port Discovery has rotating exhibits aimed at children ages 2-12, including a very popular New Year¡¯s Eve party that brings in the New Year with milk and cookies. Check out their website for upcoming musical events your kids are sure to love. On the other side of the harbor, the Maryland Science Center offers rotating exhibits, an IMAX theater and a planetarium. If you¡¯re looking for a hands-on artistic experience, head to the Baltimore Art Museum on the first Thursday of each month. Admission is free, and there are generally kid-oriented art projects available for kids of all ages.
For an animal-oriented day, head a little north of Inner Harbor to the Maryland Zoo of Baltimore. The zoo boasts a number of exhibits including a Maryland Wilderness and an African Watering Hole, and is open year-round. If you want to stay in the harbor area, the National Aquarium is a highly popular destination. There is a daily dolphin show, and an intricately designed seahorse exhibit. The large main tank boasts sharks that can be viewed from many angles. The aquarium is currently undergoing an expansion to add on an Australian exhibit featuring exotic animals from down under. Try to avoid the aquarium during peak visiting hours (on the weekends in the late morning through late afternoon), or avoid the lines altogether and purchase your tickets online in advance.
For the sports-minded in your family, head to the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum, which is also the official repository of memorabilia from the Baltimore Orioles. In the late spring through early fall, take the kids to Orioles Park at Camden yards for a game. For the more mechanically-oriented kids, check out the recently re-opened B&O railroad Museum, which holds 19th and 20th century railroad cars, unique memorabilia and landscapes with elaborate toy train tracks. During the holiday season, the B&O Railroad Museum has a Holiday Festival of Trains featuring a large assortment of operating toy train layouts from model hobbyists and clubs throughout the region. Whatever option you choose, you¡¯re sure to have a memorable day with your kids! |
