Things for Couples to do in Honolulu

Honolulu is abundant with activities and attractions for couples from A to Z.  Let¡¯s start with Air Tours.  One of the most exciting ways to see the Island of Oahu, is to tour the island by helicopter.  This will get you up close and personal to sights that are difficult to see by land.  You can almost smell the spray of the waterfalls, view deep valleys that can only be seen by air, majestic cliffs to the deep blues and greens of the Pacific ocean coastlines.  

Attractions range from Submarine tours, the Battleship Missouri Memorial & the USS Arizona Memorial, The Bishop Museum, Dole Pineapple Plantation, Hawaii Maritime Center, Hawaii¡¯s Sugar Cane Plantation Village, The Polynesian Cultural Center, Sea Life Park, The Waikiki Aquarium, The Honolulu Zoo and if you want to get wet without getting into the ocean, there¡¯s the Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park (complete with a Bar Lagoon).  The only Palace in the United States sits on the grounds of the Iolani Palace where the Hawaiian Monarchy once ruled over the Hawaiian people of Victorian days and prior to that.  Some of these attractions are outside of Honolulu, on other areas of the island, but can be accessed by Waikiki Trolley, the busline, taxicab, island touring companies, etc.  

Beaches in Honolulu are perfect for snorkeling, surfing, or just floating around on an inflatable mattress.  For the suntanner¡¯s paradise, there is the most famous beach in the world, Waikiki Beach.  It stretches along the coastline of Waikiki, in which the view consists of mostly hotels on your mountain side (mauka) and the beautiful horizon on your oceanside (makai).  My personal recommendation would be to try the canoe ride or the small catamaran rides if you have a wild side. Situated in the crater of an ancient volcano is Hanauma Bay, which is the location of the famous ¡°blow-hole¡± and world-class snorkeling and scuba diving spot.  The fish are so tame they may come up to your mask to take a look at you.  Sandy Beach is more for the experienced, strongest swimmers as it has a dangerous shore break, and strong currents.  But, it is great for sunning or taking a nice walk on shore.  Warning: For Experienced Body Surfers only.

Boating in Honolulu can be a memorable evening out at sea on a warm tropical night with cocktails and dinner on cruise ships of various sizes, if you¡¯re the sea-worthy type, or you can have a morning - midday snorkel, dive or whale-watching cruise with lunch and/snacks served along with cocktails.  Deep Water fishing is also available for the sports activist who is hardy enough to stay out on a boat in the deep, deep blue sea for several hours.

Aqua lung, tank diving is alive and well in Honolulu with offishore dives near a pair of sunken ships off of Waikiki, or reef dives where you can sometimes see eels, sea turtles, octopus, eagle rays, and maybe a white or black tipped reef shark or two.

Golfing couples can choose from two different golf courses in Honolulu; the Ala Wai Golf Course and the  Hawaii Kai Golf Course.  Make sure you pack the sunblock.

Hiking and Horseback Riding is available for those extremist couples who prefer to see this island paradise up close and on foot, or hoof.  The Kualoa Ranch is located outside of Honolulu, but tours make it available to anyone vacationing in Honolulu. There are several Nature Tour companies available, just pick up one of the many brochures on stands along Waikiki Beach, at your hotel, and the Shopping Malls.

For the History buffs who can¡¯t get enough, there¡¯s the Bishop Museum, which showcases natural and cultural history of Hawaii (ie. Hawaiian artifacts and royal family heirlooms of the Princess) and the Pacific Basin.  The Queen Emma Summer Palace located in Nuuanu, and the Iolani Palace were the Honolulu residences of the Hawaiian monarchs in Hawaii; a definite must see for the nostalgic.  The Hawaii Maritime Center carries 2,000 years of Hawaiian Maritime history, from Captain Cook and beyond, located at the waterfront next to the Aloha Tower.  For the art lovers, there¡¯s the Honolulu Academy of Arts which includes over 34,000 art works.  The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl honors the sacrifices and achievements of American Armed Forces in the Pacific during the World War II and the Korean Conflict, those missing from the Vietnam Conflict, and current military effort in Iraq.

Shopping sprees can be done all along the Waikiki strip. There¡¯s the brand name boutiques that have recently populated the area, to local Hawaiian surf shops, and shacks selling everything from coconut purses, weaved baskets, jewelry, and Hawaiian wear.  It¡¯s important to pick up your matching Hawaiian shirt and choice of exotic cool Hawaiian print dress for your days and nights out; you¡¯ll feel more like you¡¯re on vacation if you do.  Promise.  There¡¯s the Aloha Tower where you can shop til you drop, and then have dinner or a cruise later.  Ala Moana Center is another local spot with an mingling of brand name boutiques and local surf shops all in one location three stories high.

And finally, last, but not least, for those who have not yet tied the knot, but are considering sealing your relationship (or renewing it) here in beautiful Hawaii along the shores and beaches, cliffs, or on a sailboat, with an official ceremony, complete with photographer, wedding cake and a honeymoon, can find many hotels in Honolulu who will gladly prepare a feast for just the two of you, or twenty of you.
