Public transportation in Santa Barbara is very user friendly and guided tours abound to visit and view surrounding areas. You and your sweetheart may choose an afternoon of wine tasting. Hotel prices very widely from $65.00 to beyond $350.00 a night. My husband and I stayed at a cozy little inn by the harbor for $135.00 a night. It was walking distance to the beaches, harbor, and shopping and it had a grassy garden court perfect for cuddles and smooches.
The Santa Barbara Waterfront is a lovely palm-lined, meandering pathway along the sandy beaches. Several rental kiosks offer everything from skates to scooters. You can rent a peddle version of a ¡°surrey with the fringe on top¡± and enjoy some sappy old-time romance.
You may choose to splash about in the ocean and lay on the sunny beaches all day. If you are the active type, go on a seasonal whale watching tour, guided kayak tour of the Channel Islands, or rent a boat for two and glide along the waters together.
Downtown Santa Barbara is a shopper¡¯s paradise. Tree-lined State Street is the main shopping artery with lots of diversions along the side streets. This is a most pleasurable stroll for hand-holders.
The rich Spanish heritage, from mission and adobe days to haciendas and courtyards, has been well preserved by Santa Barbara, and makes for lovely and leisurely strolls throughout the downtown area. Further from town, on Painted Cave Road, you can view the astounding artwork of the Chumash Indians who lived in the area. The Painted Caves are accessible through public transportation or a guided tour. Look carefully and you will find hints of romance from generations past.
Mission Santa Barbara is one of California¡¯s most beautiful missions with vivid bougainvillea vines draping along the walls of adobe. It is a cool setting during the hot mid-day sun, and a nice way to explore California¡¯s early days.
There are a variety of historic, art and cultural museums which may require public transportation, or bike and scooter rentals, as they are located three or more miles from the beach or downtown shopping area. Or, you can just choose to dine well, stretch out in the sand and lay about in the sun like a couple of seals. Be sure to bring the suntan lotion!
