Lexington touts itself the Horse Capital of the World, so no visit is complete without including some equestrian activities. 

More than 1,000 acres of lush bluegrass is home to The Kentucky Horse Park, which shows all aspects of the relationship between people and horses. The International Museum of the Horse traces the 5,000 year old history of the horse. Take time to view their short movie, Thou Shall Fly Without Wings. The American Saddle Horse Museum has interactive displays and life-size models of the only breed of horse that is native to Kentucky. Hop aboard a covered wagon pulled by a team of draft horses or a trolley. They¡¯re great ways to get narrated tours and view the horse show facilities. Don¡¯t miss the Parade of Breeds, which displays some of the park¡¯s 40 breeds every half hour. During the Christmas season The Southern Lights Holiday Festival delights thousands of visitors with 3 miles of spectacular holiday lights.

Keeneland is one of the most beautiful racetracks in the world. Stone fences and bluegrass pasture surround this National Historic Landmark. For a hearty Southern breakfast, visit the Track Kitchen, which is also open to the public. 

For many tourists, the ultimate equestrian experience is touring a private horse farm. Because these are working farms, it¡¯s important to not just "drop by." Take a guided group tour of get a behind the scenes private tour from a knowledgeable guide. Or explore a few farms on your own during regularly scheduled visiting hours. For details on these options, check with the Lexington Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Once known as the "Athens of the West," Lexington residents still takes pride in its historic neighborhoods with restored homes from the early 19th century. Three outstanding examples are open for public tours.

The childhood home of Abraham Lincoln¡¯s wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, is a restored 1803 Georgian style home with period furnishings. Of special interest is her Meissen china collection and personal Lincoln family memorabilia.

Hunt-Morgan House and Alexander T. Hunt Civil War Museum is a Federal style mansion representing the days when Lexington was known as the "Athens of the West" for its highly cultured lifestyle. It was home to the first millionaire west of the Alleghenies, John Wesley Hunt, and later his grandson, Civil War General John Hunt Morgan, who was nicknamed the "Thunderbolt of the Confederacy." Look for the three-story cantilevered staircase, a period garden, and fine Kentucky furniture. On the second floor is the Alexander T. Hunt Civil War Museum with Civil War memorabilia and relics.

As a U. S. Senator, Speaker of the House, and three time presidential candidate, Henry Clay was an important statesman during the early 19th century. He lived in Lexington at Ashland, his 600-acre farm. About 20 acres from this farm are now a National Historic Landmark. The interior of the house has been restored to its 1880 appearance featuring Clay family art and furniture. Outside there is a formal 18th century style walled garden, a smokehouse, ice houses, and Clay's 1833 carriage.

Be sure to check the University of Kentucky (UK) calendar of events for Wildcats sports events, fine arts performances, and other campus activities scheduled during your visit. The Lexington Philharmonic and Actors Guild of Lexington also offer evening performances. Enjoy live jazz and blues at Cheapside Bar and Grill, Nadine¡¯s, Oscar¡¯s Piano Bar, or Natasha¡¯s Cafe.
