Southern California's electrifying city of San Diego is truly a place that never runs short of things for guests to do. Coming up with a list of activities for couples to experience while in the city proved to be a daunting task; there are so many possibilities. Hopefully this list of a portion of available activities will help you to plan a memorable couple's trip to San Diego for you and your partner.  

If a trip to Sea World is on your agenda, you may consider the unique experience they offer called Dine with Shamu. Shamu is the resident killer whale and the park offers a buffet with a reserved table next to Shamu's water home. You will be entertained while dining and now and then trainers are available to answer questions. The cost of the buffet is in addition to park admission, which is required to take advantage of Dine with Shamu. If you prefer getting to the park early, they also have a Breakfast with Shamu. The breakfasts are available on weekends and holidays. The extensive buffet includes French toast, eggs, sausage, fruit, meats, juices, and more. As with the Dine with Shamu program, this meal also requires a cost in addition to park admission.

If you enjoy roller coasters or spending time with your partner at amusement parks, there will be some great choices in the San Diego area.  Belmont Park is near the beach area and has unique shopping and dining options as well as rides from the mild to the heart-pounding thrilling. The 1925 Giant Dipper Roller Coaster is here along with many other rides and activities. Additional park rides include the Chaos, bumper cars, and Vertical Plunge. There is an arcade and a video gamer's paradise called Gamelords.

For the athletic visitor, the park's simulated wave offers rides and lessons. Belmont Park also has an aquatic center for fitness and sports. It is San Diego's biggest heated pool and is called The Plunge. For still more of an athletic workout, try a climb on Belmont's Rock Wall.

Did you pack a bathing suit? If so, and if your visit to San Diego is during the warm season (starting late May), try Knott's Soak City Water Park. Dozens of water rides are available here in the form of slides, falls, drops, plunges, high speed slides, wave pools, and many more. Cabanas can be rented for the day and food is available at this park.

If all those athletic options aren't of interest to you and your partner, or you want to plan a quieter day, San Diego is home to a large number of museums. Research before your trip, or check in a phone book from your hotel, but a few of the top museums are: The Whaley House Museum (haunted!), the San Diego Maritime Museum, San Diego Natural History Museum, San Diego Aerospace Museum, San Diego Museum of Man, and San Diego Museum of Art. 

Balboa Cultural Park is unbelievably huge and totally packed with things to do. In addition to the customary recreational options, hiking trails, and so on, Balboa offers much more. This is where the well known San Diego Zoo is found.  There are beautiful gardens, more than a dozen museums, and dining facilities all found on site at Balboa. Look for exhibits and live performances in the park throughout the day also.

If you enjoy golfing, there are some excellent courses in and near the city. Biking and hiking trails, scenic canyons to hike and enjoy, surfing spots, and beaches are all in abundance in San Diego. There are a few arenas and sports complexes around the city for all kinds of participant or spectator sports. It goes without saying that all major water sports are possible around San Diego as well.

If you enjoy historical areas, stop by the Victorian Gaslamp Quarter (16 blocks in size) for a shopping and food experience. This is a good place for walking or taking a slow stroll while taking in all the sights. Old Town San Diego State Historic Park brings early Mexican and American history to the downtown city area. Plan to spend at least a few hours at Old Town.

In order to see the city from the water, try a Hornblower Cruise. You will see some historic ships in this area including the USS Midway and the USS Ronald Reagan. Hornblower offers various types of cruises including harbor cruises, whale watching cruises, dinner, and brunch cruises.  The whale watching tour is 3 1/2 hours; harbor tours have an option of one or two hours. If you choose the brunch cruise, the menu will include fruits, salads, meats, eggs, pastries, potatoes, a dessert table, and unlimited champagne. Dinner buffets include Caesar Salad, your choice of steak, chicken, or vegetarian, and dessert.

San Diego Harbor Excursion is another option for a day or evening of cruising. They present the same kind of tours as Hornblowers on one of their eight boats. The North Bay 12 mile tour lasts for one hour and shows passengers the North Island Naval Air Station, Naval Sub Base and the Cabrillo National Monument. The South Bay option sails by the Coronado Bay Bridge and shipyards, including catching sight of the U. S. Navy fleet. If your choice is a Full Bay tour, you will cover 25 miles, all of the above sites of interest, and the tour will last for two hours.

There are numerous options for performances in San Diego. Some of the clubs and theaters from which to choose include the National Comedy Theater, Old Globe Theater, the San Diego Civic Theater (opera and Broadway), and many other theaters and live performances all over the city. Live performance, of course, is just one small element in a very exciting nightlife scene that San Diego has to offer visitors.
