There are many activities for couples to do in the Land of Enchantment's city of Albuquerque. It is the largest city in New Mexico and was founded in 1706. Albuquerque began as a farming area and military outpost for the Spanish.
If you are lucky enough to be in town in October, you will certainly be well aware of the hot air balloon fiesta that is happening. It is the largest of its kind in the world. If you aren't interested in the balloons or air activities, there are countless things to do that are based around the Rio Grande River.
If neither air nor water activities excite you and your partner, head for the nearby Sandia Mountains. They have a tramway that runs from the bottom of the mountain to the very top, and that gives it the distinction of being the largest aerial tram in the world. In addition to seeing some magnificent sites from atop the mountain, there is some great skiing available (30 trails, 4 lifts).
The original plaza area of old Albuquerque has been kept well preserved and is now called Old Town. This historic area is a good place to go for a stroll on the brick pathways and go shopping for all things southwestern. The shops here should provide hours of browsing or shopping pleasure. When you tire of shopping, restaurants, smaller cafes, and galleries also use Old Town as their place of residence.
Sometime during your stay at Albuquerque you may want to try to spend a few hours at the Petroglyph National Monument. This area, maintained by the National Park Service, covers more than seven thousand acres. You will see volcanic cones along with about twenty-five thousand images that people from the native cultures of New Mexico (along with some of the early settlers) carved into this area. Start your orientation at the visitor's center.
The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center offers museums, galleries, and much information about the Pueblo people. The museum here exhibits ancient artifacts as well as contemporary art. The Center is operated by the 19 Indian Pueblos of New Mexico. There is a gift shop and cafe on site.
If you and your partner enjoy water sports, a quiet walk, or hiking, the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park will be enjoyable. Fishing, boating, water skiing, and sailing are available here, along with beautiful trails for walking and watching the birds and wildlife.
For higher excitement after the slower walks or boating, Cliff's Amusement Park on Osuna Road will be a good choice. The thrill rides include a super coaster, The New Mexico Rattler. This coaster is 3,000 feet in length and has many drops, fast speeds and there is a tunnel that takes riders under the ground for about one hundred feet. Other thrill rides include the Rock-o-Plane, the Yo-Yo, the Cliff Hanger, and others. For an experience with lots of lights and very loud music, try the Musik Express. Family rides and water rides (i.e. The Big Flush Water Coaster) are also found at Cliff's.
Many museums are found in the city if you wish to spend some of your time in that way. Some of them from which to choose include the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, the very unique American International Rattlesnake Museum (be aware we're talking live rattlers here!), the National Atomic Museum, the Albuquerque Museum, LodeStar Astronomy Center, the Meteorite Museum, and a number of art museums and galleries.
If gambling is on your agenda of things to do during your visit, there are indeed casinos in Albuquerque. Try the Sandia Casino or San Felipe's Casino Hollywood. On Hagan Road, San Felipe's offers dining and entertainment as well as more than 700 slot machines, roulette, craps, poker, and blackjack. Sandia's offers more than 1,700 slot machines and many casino games and tables. It is located at the I-25 Tramway exit. Still another option for a casino is found at the Downs at Albuquerque casino complex and race track. Find the complex at the New Mexico State Fairgrounds.
The Rio Grande Zoo has been in operation for nearly 80 years and covers 65 acres. Animals of 250 different species are housed here. The landscaping is beautiful and this is also a great opportunity for some exercise. If you walk through the entire zoo, the distance is two and a quarter miles.
The zoo is one facility of four in the Albuquerque Biological Park. The other facilities here are the Albuquerque Aquarium, Rio Grande Botanic Garden and the Tingley Beach Aquatic Park.
Additional ideas of things to do while in Albuquerque include visiting one of the Pueblos, the El Morro National Monument, or the Mystery Cafe Dinner Theater. There are also other theaters for entertainment and countless bars and clubs for those wishing to experience the city's nightlife.
If the Mystery Cafe Dinner Theater is your choice, you will be served a four course meal while helping to solve a mystery that is being played out before your eyes. Your meal will include the soup of the day, a green salad, your choice of entree between beef, chicken, a vegetarian choice, or fish, and dessert.
If you still need additional ideas, you and your partner can go biking at Volcanic Park, check out one of the golf courses, or visit Ceremonial Cave where the natives to New Mexico held their ceremonies in ancient days. No matter how long you are scheduled to stay in this "ever-exciting city," you will always have plenty of things to do to remain very busy and smiling. |
