Key West is a fun, romantic destination for couples. Key West is the most southerly of the Florida Keys; it's about a 3-hour drive from Miami, or you can fly into Key West's airport. The weather in the Keys is usually great unless you're there during a hurricane; temperatures average highs in the 80s and lows in the 70s, so you won't be too hot or too cold.
Key West has many bed-and-breakfast inns, and they are great places for couples to spend a night or two. There are lots of hotels, too, from the expensive Hyatt Key West Resort and Wyndham Casa Marina to the less costly Blue Parrot Inn. Hostelling International Key West provides rooms for around $20 for those who want to travel on the cheap or find themselves in Key West with no reservations.
Most people know that Ernest Hemingway lived in Key West for many years; his swimming pool was the first one built in Key West, and you can see it by visiting the Hemingway House and Museum in Old Town on Whitehead Street. More than 60 cats, descendants of Hemingway's six-toed cat given to him by a ship captain, now live on the grounds of the estate; some of the grandkitties have six toes too. Read some of Hemingway's works before going and see the location that motivated Papa to write "The Old Man and the Sea"; the museum and house are open every day and there's an admission fee.
Key West is known for its magnificent sunsets, and Mallory Square is the place to be at sunset. Tons of people go there every evening to stroll, do the Duval Kraal (pub crawl on Duval St.), eat and drink, see the most unusual street performers, and wait for the sky to turn beautiful colors. Mallory Square is full of shops and restaurants and is a popular destination for tourists night and day; you never know what you'll see there but it's sure to be interesting. Get there a couple of hours before sunset to enjoy the full experience; avoid Mallory Square if you want to be alone or don't like crowds.
Many couples go to Key West to enjoy water sports, both on and under the water. Boating is popular; you can take your own boat, charter one, or pay admission to ride on some. Sail on a catamaran, look at the amazing sea creatures and coral reefs underneath you on a glass-bottom boat, or charter a fishing boat for a deep-sea adventure. Take a boat out to go snorkeling or scuba diving on the reefs or out to the Dry Tortugas. Key West does not have white sand beaches like the rest of Florida, but there are many good experiences to be had in the ocean and the gulf.
Since Key West is southernmost of all the Florida Keys and the US, there's a buoy that declares this to be true; Key West is actually closer to Cuba than to Miami. There's also a hotel that is said to be the southernmost house in the US; it's called Southernmost House Grand Hotel & Museum and it was built in 1896. Although there are supposedly other houses more southern than this one, and also a military base, it was southernmost for a long, long time and so retains the name. The house is very lovely and much photographed; the hotel rooms are quite pricey, but of course guests are paying to stay at the southernmost point in the US.
Across the street from the Hemingway house is the Key West Lighthouse. If you climb the 88 steps to the top, you'll have a great view of Key West; the lighthouse dates back to the mid-1800s and is more than 80 feet high. There's a museum where the lighthouse keeper used to live, and it tells the story of how the lighthouse saved many ships from wrecking on the reefs and put the pirates who looted the wrecks out of business.
It's fun to stroll around Key West and see how many weird sights you can see. Chickens are plentiful in Key West; they wander around in many different areas and don't seem to belong to anyone. You can even see them strolling around some restaurants. There are art cars that drive around; they are covered in objects that are glued to the cars and are quite interesting. The Key West Cemetery has some odd headstone inscriptions, and you can always see some people wearing some very attention-getting outfits on an evening stroll in Key West.
Two things that all couples who visit Key West must try are conch fritters and Key lime pie. There are many restaurants and bars in Key West that serve very good food and drinks, and most will provide these two delicacies for you. Probably the most famous bar in Key West is Sloppy Joe's, known as Hemingway's favorite bar; they even have a Hemingway look-alike contest each year. A favorite restaurant for tourists is Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville, which will serve you a Cheeseburger in Paradise as well as a margarita; it's a good place to eat even if you're not a parrothead. Turtle Kraals has great seafood, such as mango crab cakes, and Blue Heaven is just a crazy place that serves amazing food; all couples should experience this fun place at least once.
Key West has many fun things for couples to do; if you like the sun, the ocean, and a laid-back atmosphere, it's the place for you. The weather's usually nice, the people there are friendly, and there are lots of fun activities you can enjoy together.
