New Jersey isn¡¯t usually known as a visitor¡¯s haven, more likely it is known as where most New Yorker¡¯s live to beat the high New York City cost of living while still bringing home the higher wages. However, Newark has over 756 acres of county parks and 39 acres of city parks. For casual walks, jogging, or just peaceful places to picnic try Branch Brook for 341 aces of county park land, or Jesse Allen Park for 8 acres of city park land. For other city sponsored ideas try one of their four outdoor pools or their indoor pool. There are also five recreational centers and two ice skating rinks. So you can see, there are plenty of things to begin your daytrip to Newark.
Other ideas for a day trip include several events and structures in the arts and entertainment field.
Newark Museum
The Newark Museum on Washington Street had a new $20 million addition designed by Michael Graves. It was founded in 1909 and houses collections like the Tibetan collection, a sculpture garden in the back area of the museum complex, and a 1784 built one room structure. There are many fine beautiful items to spend the afternoon partaking and to give your new digital camera a workout.
Aljira
Aljira: A Center for Contemporary Arts is located on Washington Place. A not for profit center that exhibits local artists, it has sculptures and paintings. It also has some live performance art on occasion. It is not open on Mondays or Tuesdays, so plan this excursion for later in the week.
The Art Gallery
Another art center, this one on Halsey Street, The Art Gallery was founded in 1961. This art gallery has more world known artists and sculptures than Aljira and is more non local in its concentration. It is open every day but Sunday.
Newark Symphony Hall
The Newark Symphony Hall is located on Broad Street. It was built in 1925, and is a New Jersey cultural center for ballet, opera, and professional theatre groups. The building is of Greek and Egyptian Marble and is itself a work of art. It is open Monday through Friday.
Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart
The fifth largest cathedral in North America, the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart it was granted minor basilica status by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Newark in October 1995. It covers around 45,000 square feet and is constructed in the French Gothic style. This is another major stop for your photo opportunities.
Kikamo¡¯s Blues People
A night spot housed on South Tenth Street, Kikamo¡¯s Blues People is in the home of playwright and poet Amiri Baraka. Not just a haven for the blues, there are also literary performances, theatrical performances, and dance. There is a performance every Saturday night.
Newark may not sound like a tourist spot, but with ample parks, galleries, and museums you can see it is indeed a cultural couple hot spot.
