Omaha Nebraska ranks high on list after list. Even though it¡¯s a great place to live, raise kids, be educated and live safely, it is still rated high in fun. The population of Omaha is young, median age 32.6. The cultural, educational and creative diversity of its citizens has birthed a rich and interesting activity smorgasbord.
Because there is so much information to offer, this article cannot give you website and details. Consider this article as the jumping off point to a great and interesting experience. The Omaha metro area extends to encompass a population of nearly 1,000,000, the border of 2 states and several smaller communities that could be considered extensions of Omaha.
What kind of ¡°fun¡± are you looking for? Because your fun might not be mine and vice versa, I have tried to break fun ideas into categories with some unique Omaha flavor thrown in to the mix.
Cultural: Omaha may be Midwest, but it isn¡¯t hick. Movie producers, actors, musicians and other artists call Omaha their home town. Omaha has its own ballet, symphony, opera and playhouse. Each has a terrific reputation and offers professional, entertaining fare. If you are in town during the right season, Omaha even offers terrific fun in the area parks. Shakespeare on the Green, complete with bring your own fondue and blankets, has got to be the most fun, laidback, cultural offering available.
Culinary: Omaha boasts Nebraska beef. And more restaurants than you can imagine. At one point it laid claim to more restaurants per capita than any other city similar in size. Even now it has double the number of pizza restaurants than a similar sized city in Ohio. Ethnic restaurants? Omaha covers them all. Take your pick. You can¡¯t go wrong with word of mouth restaurants in Omaha.
Historical: History is all over the place in Omaha and the surrounding areas. You could go on a history scavenger hunt and barely scratch the surface. Railroad history is huge in Omaha, as is the history of the pioneers. And let¡¯s not neglect Lewis and Clark and the Native American historical offering.
Sports: No matter the season in Omaha, you can find a favorite sporting activity. Boasting several lakes, rivers, parks and golf courses, you will not find it hard to find an activity that interests you. Even miniature golf and horseback riding are offered. Omaha is the home of the College World Series in June and its own baseball team. Across the river in Iowa, is professional hockey and skiing.
Nature: Omaha has 7,000 acres of parks. Across the river, in Iowa, even more acreage. Camping, nature trails, bike trails, hiking, fishing, water skiing, running trails, feeding ducks, soaking up the sun and cook outs. Cuddling up and sharing an umbrella in the rain, Bald Eagle watching, garden walking.
Music: With 3 major auditoriums, casinos across the river, an amphitheatre and an airport, big name concerts are a near weekly event. Christian concerts are often held at super size Omaha churches as well.
Art: You could go on an outdoor sculpture hunt in Omaha. Artwork is scattered throughout the city. Omaha boasts a large art museum with visiting exhibits. A new modern art center has recently opened, with some artists doing live demonstrations. Several outdoor art fairs have sprung up around the city at various times throughout the year.
Fun: Council Bluffs, just across the river from Omaha (7 miles from downtown Omaha) is home to one of the last existing circa ¡®50¡¯s drive-in theatres. Omaha is home to one of the highest rated zoos in the nation. It also has a drive thru park just a few miles west of the city, just down the road from the air force museum. How about a gondola or carriages ride in downtown Omaha?
