From fun in the sun to thrilling nightlife, Oklahoma City welcomes couples for fun, Sooner State style! Over 12,000 hotel rooms are waiting for you and your significant other to visit Oklahoma City.
No matter what your tastes, you'll find something to suit. Most visitors to the city find the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Musuem worth a visit. Within the 32 acre complex, visitors find one of the nation's largest collections of historic artifacts, exhibits featuring pioneer and Native American life, rodeo, and more. A 33 foot high statue of Buffalo Bill Cody is on site along with the famed "The End of the Trail" by James Earle Fraser. The Rodeo Hall of Fame features portraits of rodeo's best along with trophies, saddles, and other memorabilia from the sport. Visions of the West Gallery features a old time Western street with a sod house, marshal's office and train depot. Other displays highlight the idealized West Americans know from movies and Western novels. The National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum is located just off I-44 on N.E. 63rd Street.
Spend all day together and explode the Omniplex, a cultural and educational center. The Omniplex is home to the Kirkpatrick Science and Air Space Museum, several other museums, a planetarium, galleries, gardens, a greenhouse and a on-site domed theater. Make special note of the Red Earth Indian Center featuring an outstanding collection of Native American displays and the Hands-On Science Museum with 350 different interactive exhibits. The Omniplex is at N.E. 52nd and Martin Luther King Avenue.
Some couples may seek the thrill of Frontier City, both theme park and recreated 1880's western town. Six live shows are staged each day and rides include three roller coasters as well as a vertical thrill ride called ErUPtion.
Frontier City, owned by the same company that operates the Six Flags theme parks throughout the U.S., is off I-35.
In Stockyard City, Oklahoma City's stockyard district experience authentic cowboys at work. Still the world's largest stocker and feeder cattle market, the Oklahoma City Stockyards are all that and more. The Stockyard City district is filled with the ambiance of another age with period lighting. Many of the local western wear shops and boot dealers are found in the area along with some of the world's best steaks. Try a fresh, hand cut steak at Cattlemen's Steakhouse, a local fixture since 1910. Other restaurants - many offering beef steak - are in the district along with a host of speciality shops. Watch cowboys at work or taste the flavor of Stockyard City.
A more romantic experience can be found in the Bricktown District. Once Oklahoma City's wholesale commerical district, Bricktown underwent a major renovation that began in the mid 1980's. Bound by Main, Reno, and Walnut Streets with the Santa Fe railroad tracks, Bricktown is now the entertainment district. Many venues offer live music nightly. Places like the Wormy Dog Saloon offer live performances and other specials. Try a "Cowboy Cut" ribeye at Mickey Mantle's Steakhouse. The SBC Bricktown Ballpark hosts minor league baseball in the district. A canal travels a mile long path through Bricktown. Step aboard a water taxi for a narrated tour and you'll feel like you're in Venice.
Downtown Oklahoma City was redeveloped in 1964. Inspired by Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens, urban architect I.M. Pei added lakes, landscaped hills, gardens, and a fabulous glass and steel botantical bridge that features a greenhouse. Hop aboard an Oklahoma Spirit Trolley to get around. A somber visit to the Oklahoma City National Memorial at Robinson and Harvey Avenues, 4th and 6th streets remembers the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. Adjacent to the memorial is the Memorial Museum.
Other opportunities for fun in Oklahoma's capitol city include the Remington Park Racetrack, the Oklahoma City Zoo, Myriad Botanical Gardens, Oklahoma State Museum, or a Saturday night out at the Oklahoma Opry. Now in its' 21st year, the Opry is billed as Oklahoma's country music show and plays each Saturday at 8pm. The Oklahoma Opry is at 404 West Commerce.
