Long Beach is yet another beautiful coastal town in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.  With fewer crowds than the touristy Venice Beach, Long Beach is the perfect getaway on land and sea for young and not-so-young couples.

Long Beach has 5 ? miles of smooth pavement along its beach. Couples can take in the ocean air while walking, running, biking, or blading. On the south end of the beach is Belmont Shores / Alamitos Bay. On the north is Shoreline Village. Whether couples choose north or south, they can rent jet skis, kayaks, boats, and windsurfing equipment to enjoy the view. 

Athletic couples might want to watch the Ice Dogs hockey team play a home game. There are also several golf courses, bowling alleys and swimming pools if they don¡¯t care to take a dip in the ocean. Long Beach is also home to several companies that have chartered narrated cruises, where couples can whale watch or go sport fishing.

The Queen Mary is another good stop.  Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is one of the most famous ships in history and the grandest ocean liner ever built. Couples can dine at the Sunday Brunch in the Grand Salon, the ship's original First-Class Dining Room. Other weekdays try Sir Winston's restaurant featuring award-winning Continental and California cuisine. They will also discover superb service, an extensive wine list and panoramic views of the coastline.

Couples will also enjoy the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden complete with koi ponds. It¡¯s located on the campus of California State University. For a donation as small as $2 you get a walk through the pines, music from the waterfalls and birds and serenity as you walk around the lake. There will be iris and azaleas in the spring, flowering magnolia in summer and chrysanthemums in the fall. Wooden bridges and bamboo, a favorite of the Japanese, are also there. 

Long Beach also has the Aquarium of the Pacific. It celebrates the planet¡¯s largest and most diverse body of water. The Aquarium is world-class with one of the most creative and comprehensive marine-themed exhibitions ever conceived. A couple¡¯s journey through the Pacific Rim unfolds as they are guided through the Pacific Ocean¡¯s three major regions: Southern California/Baja, Northern Pacific and the Tropical Pacific. 

If couples can¡¯t jet to Italy, they might want to try taking a romantic gondola cruise through the canals of Long Beach's Naples Island. Gondoliers will skillfully move smoothly along your voyage as you unwind with a basket of French bread, cheese, salami, and any beverage that you bring. They even provide the ice bucket, glasses and an opener if necessary! Cruises are offered seven days a week, all year long, 

For ¡°dining, dancing and romancing¡± couples must stop by The Sky Room atop the Breakers on the 14th floor. There is 360-degree view and live jazz and vocals Monday through Friday. On Saturday nights, Tino Productions is featured. They are a full orchestra specializing in all styles of music including Swing, Motown, Big Band, and Salsa.
