It's easy to fly into San Antonio and not rent a car. Base your stay around the Riverwalk. Major chains offer modern accommodations in all prices ranges that are a pleasant walk from the Riverwalk. (If you choose to drive, be sure and check the parking fee at your hotel.) Historic hotels with modern amenities include the Menger Hotel, the Crockett Hotel, and the Emily Morgan Hotel, which are also across the street from the Alamo.
For twelve days in 1836 a small band of Texans were surrounded by Mexican General Santa Anna's huge army. The site of this battle, the Alamo, is considered the cradle of Texas liberty. Watch the brief introductory film, browse through displays of historical artifacts, and take a short guided tour. Then walk across the street to the 21st century at the Riverwalk.

Day or night on the Riverwalk, you're surrounded by music and excitement. Relax with your favorite beverage at a sidewalk caf?? and engage in one of the most popular activities, people watching. You'll soon see passengers on a river cruiser enjoying a narrated tour; don't miss out on taking your own ride. If browsing the shops whets your appetite, you're in luck. From Tex-Mex to tamales, steak to sushi, it's all available in area restaurants. The Riverwalk also has an outdoor theatre where the audience sits on grassy slopes while the performance stage is on the other side of the river.
There are plenty of things to do away from the Riverwalk, too. Take a trolley tour from the station next to the Menger Hotel. Passes allow to getting on and off to visit attractions of your choice. If you don't want a group tour, numerous stairways connect the Riverwalk to area streets so pedestrians can easily get around. And the San Antonio Streetcars follow 4 color coded routes with frequent stops at popular tourist attractions and restaurants.
After visiting the Alamo downtown, visit the Mission Trails. The San Antonio Missions National Historial Park has 4 more Spanish Colonial missions dating back to the 18th century. Began your tour at the Visitors Center at Mission San Jose.
HemisFair Park, the site of the 1968 World's Fair, is a beautifully landscaped area that's home to two important attractions. Discover the dozens of ethnic groups, from Germans to African Americans to Mexicans that have created a diverse population in Texas when you check out the interesting displays at the Institute of Texan Cultures. Get a great view of San Antonio from 579 feet above ground by riding the elevator to the top of the Tower of the Americas.
Market Square is the largest Mexican market outside of Mexico. In addition to shops overflowing with colorful imports, there are weekend fiestas, mariachi serenades, and plenty of food options. The chilled fresh fruit salads are especially appealing on a hot day.
The cobblestone streets of Market Square offer a chance to see glass blowers, weavers, and other artists at work. This is also the site of Night in Old San Antonio (NIOSA), a huge festival held every April. If you like arts and crafts don't miss the Southwest School of Art & Craft for a chance to watch talented artists creating pottery and other forms of art.
The 343 acre Brackenridge Park is home to more than 3,000 animals at the San Antonio Zoo, and the Witte Museum, a natural history museum. Take time to enjoy the beautiful plants and lily ponds at the Japanese Tea Gardens.
