If you find yourself visiting Anchorage without a travel companion, there is no need to worry about not being able to find things to do. No matter what type of attraction holds your interests, you will most likely be able to find many fun things to do in this exciting Alaskan city.

If you want to partake in some great outdoor activities, there are many available around Prince William Sound. You can hike, rent a kayak, or bicycle around the area. Many of the views are absolutely magnificent. You will be able to find tours going out for whale watching and seeing things like the glaciers and fjords are a bonus on many of the tours and cruises.

A relatively new attraction in Anchorage that is definitely worth a visit is the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Opened in 1999, the center offers demonstrations, workshops, and exhibits that celebrate the native Alaskan cultures.  Dancers, videos, and storytellers help to tell the story of the groups of people native to the area.

The Alaska Zoo on O'Malley Road is open seven days a week and can offer an afternoon of fun whether the guest is with others or alone. You will see various animals and birds at this small zoo, native species (fox, bears, moose, otters, coyote, etc), and exotic animals (Amur tigers, elephants, camels, yaks, leopards). The zoo covers 25 acres and has an interesting history.  A local contest winner in 1966 chose a prize of a baby elephant instead of $3,000. The elephant's name was Annabelle and the winner boarded her at a local horse ranch. Eventually a children's zoo was started after many people in the community continued showing an interest in visiting Annabelle.

The Anchorage Museum of History and Art offer nearly 18,000 objects in a collection for guests to enjoy. There are also artifacts and more than a quarter of a million historical photographs.  You will also find traveling exhibits that are shown throughout the year. The museum, located in downtown Anchorage is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. A museum shop and a cafe are available on the premises.

The Anchorage Concert Association offers an evening of excellent dance, music, or theater.  Another option for an activity if you enjoy music is the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra. Be sure to check into the pre-concert activities that are part of the activities for guests here.

If you enjoy activities that require water, this area has very many lakes for those kinds of sports. A few lakes to look for while you are in the area are Lake Spenard, Lake Hood, DeLong Lake, Jewel Lake, Goose Lake, Eklutna Lake, and Campbell Lake.

If you want to give yourself a very special and memorable excursion while in Anchorage, choose one of the tours or cruises that are offered to tourists here. Be sure to have plenty of film for the camera. Choose from tours that will show some historical points of interest, glaciers, or perhaps a trip to watch bears fishing for salmon at the Katmai National Park and Preserve.

Another excursion takes guests to a fish camp and many of the guided tours include catching a glimpse of Mt. McKinley in one way or another, often by plane. There are fjord tours that include starting with a railroad ride from Anchorage and tours to Mahay's Canyon and Talkeetna Canyon for a white water rapids adventure.

Nestled between Campbell Creek, Far North Bicentennial Park, and Chugach State Park, you will find the Alaska Botanical Garden. It covers more than 100 acres and the tranquil setting offers a few thousand perennial plants and many plant species that are indigenous to the area.

There are numerous museums in an around Anchorage if you wish to spend a quiet day or couple of days museum hopping. In addition to the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, a few other museums in the city include the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum, the Imaginarium (hands-on science museum, often geared toward children, but fun for guests of any age), and the Heritage Library and Museum. There is also an Alaska State Trooper Museum, Alaska Experience Center, and various specialty art galleries in the city. Try the Alaska Museum of Natural History if you have an interest in rocks and minerals, dinosaurs, etc. 

For the outdoors or sports enthusiast, there are several biking and hiking trails, some ski and cross-country skiing areas, and jogging paths.  The scenic views here are like no other and even an ordinary walk can turn into quite a visual experience. For an uphill climb that is a little more than six miles in distance, try the Arctic Valley Trail. The views are tremendous if you are prepared to endure the climb.

For a totally different kind of activity and if you are visiting during the season they operate, try Alaska's Trails and Tails. In addition to being a bed and breakfast, they offer dog sled rides and tours. If you are interested in more than just a "ride," there is a training option after which you can run a dog sled on your own.  There are various packages from which to choose and the most extensive is a five day adventure called "The Call of the Wild."
