Traveling alone doesn't need to be lonely or boring. Most cities have numerous activities for visitors whether with a group or "flying solo" so to speak. Cincinnati, Ohio, is no exception and there are many things for a person traveling alone to enjoy.

Cincinnati Art Museum is a great way to spend some alone time in the city. It is actually one of the oldest visual arts museums in the United States and it was established in 1881. The many galleries and tens of thousands of art pieces that are housed here include, to name a few of the galleries, Egyptian, Islamic, and Medieval art; Renaissance, Baroque, and Contemporary; Greek, African and Roman art. The museum is closed on Mondays and is open until 9 p.m. on Wednesdays. Every other day of the week has a closing time of 5 p.m. and the doors open at 11 a.m. There is no admission fee and visitors will find a museum shop and library as well as a cafe serving sandwiches and salad, entrees, and desserts.

For something totally different than a quiet day at a museum, try one of the amusement parks in the area. They are Paramount's Kings Island and Coney Island Cincinnati. Often amusement parks are the kind of place that whole families or friends attend together, but when one is traveling alone, the need for schedules and synchronizing times is not necessary. It can be a very relaxing day of seeing, doing, and eating what you want without the pressures of time restraints.

Kings Island offers more than eighty rides of all kinds. Some of the major rides are the Adventure Express coaster, Runaway Reptar (it is Paramount, after all!), the Wild Thornberry's River Adventure, a pirate ship ride called Viking Fury, and a steam locomotive. Other attractions include a water park (with more than 50 activities including 30 slides), a ride that's a replica (1/3 scale) of the Eiffel Tower and plenty of thrill rides including Delirium, the Son of Beast coaster, the Beast itself, Vortex, Top Gun, Drop Zone, flight of Fear, and various other thrill rides and coasters. You may want to take a white water rafting trip with the Whitewater Canyon attraction, or another way to get wet is with Congo Falls.

As if all those rides and all that fun wasn't enough, the park also offers live shows and concerts throughout the season, so check times and concert / show schedules.

Coney Island Cincinnati is another great attraction to visit for some serious fun time. There will certainly be no boredom! There are thrill rides and more quiet rides, and one of the newest is the Scream Machine freefall drop ride.

Visitors of any age will enjoy a ride on the Grand Carousel. The Python Roller Coaster is not for the faint of heart, but the Bumper Boats or Pedal Boat rides on Lake Como are a bit more calming. Coney has traditional rides such as the Ferris wheel, a "Kids Town" area (an entire town with everything "kid sized" as the name suggests), and a miniature golf course. Live stage shows are presented and an arcade game area is available at Coney Cincinnati.

The award winning Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden has been in operation since 1875 and it is the second oldest zoo in America. The zoo and gardens cover 75 acres and is home to more than 500 species of animals and three thousand varieties of plants. A few of the many animal exhibits include the Penguin Walkabout, Jungle Trails, Tiger Canyon, Lords of the Arctic, Flamingo Cove, World of the Insect, Monkey Island, and Wetland Trails.

If you are visiting the city during the baseball season and have a craving for a ball park hot dog and seeing the boys of summer play, stop by the home of the Cincinnati Reds, the Great American Ball Park. Find the ball park in the downtown area of the city, along the banks of the Ohio River.

The Cincinnati Railway Company offers passengers the thrill of a 1950s diesel electric locomotive while using the traveling method people used in the bygone days. Check the railway's schedules for the various theme rides they offer, or simply take a relaxing ride through the countryside. For a more exciting excursion, try one of their murder mystery dinner train rides.

If you would like to spend some quiet time touring historical areas or museums, Cincinnati has many of such types of activities from which to choose. Two historical sites of interest here are the William Howard Taft National Historic Site and the Harriet Beecher Stowe House.

In addition to the Cincinnati Art Museum highlighted above, a few of the other museums in the city include the Taft Museum, the Cincinnati Museum Center (actually three museums and an Omnimax theater), the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, the Contemporary Arts Center, the Pendleton Art Center, and the Cincinnati Observatory.

Aronoff Center for the Arts on Walnut Street is a great place for catching theater and Broadway shows as well as dance performances. Other options in this field of entertainment are the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra and the Cincinnati Opera presentations. Check into the schedule for the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and the Cincinnati Pops and Symphony Orchestras, too. Any classical music buff will have a paradise of options in this city.

Whatever you do during your stay in Cincinnati, be sure to grab a bowl of the infamous Cincinnati Chili sometime during your trip. There are so many things to see and do here that a visitor will be too busy to remember that he or she is traveling alone.
