Oklahoma City may be thought of as a small city located almost in the center of the Midwest, but it is so much more. The city, with a population of over 500,000, is experiencing a rebirth and revitalization unlike any other. This city with its small town feel is actually a center of culture and art.
For the individual who is passing through Oklahoma City on business, or simply spending a weekend away, this is definitely a place where traveling alone does not mean searching for something to do. In fact, this city has so much to offer the person traveling alone that you might need to make another trip to the city just to see everything that is available.
Most people are certainly aware that Oklahoma City was the site of the worst act of domestic terrorism in the history of the United States. The bombing of the federal building in this city killed 168 people, many of them children. The site where the federal building stood is now a national memorial. Here, visitors can walk through a beautifully landscaped memorial with 168 chairs representing those who died in the blast. The memorial also includes a museum that details the events of the day.
Oklahoma City has many other museums detailing the art and history of this city. The State Museum of History is dedicated to the history of Oklahoma. In addition, the 1889er Museum details how the city was born during the land rush of 1889 when homesteaders staked their claim on what would become Oklahoma City.
For a broader look at Western culture and art, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum displays various types of western art. Also, the Harm Homestead is an historic home detailing the history of the Civil War and American Indians. Finally, the 45th Infantry Division Museum is the place to experience the history of World War II.
Of course, if a broader look at science fits your taste, then the Kirkpatrick Science and Air Space Museum is a must see. This complex is known as the Smithsonian of the Southwest. Inside, the visitor will be treated a science museum, an air space museum, and even a photography hall of fame. This museum is definitely worth the trip!
After spending so much time inside, it is time to get out in the sun. The first stop for anyone wanting to be outside should be the Oklahoma City Zoo. This facility has 110 acres of all types of animals and wildlife. After the zoo, it is time to experience the Myriad Botanical Gardens, where you can experience waterfalls and tropical gardens.
Following a day of experiencing so much art, history, and nature, it is time to relax with good food and new friends. Oklahoma City is home to wide varity of restaurants and cafes that are sure to please any food lover. After dinner, the visitor can experience a lively nightlife, complete with clubs that cater to all types of scenes and people.
While many people may only think of Oklahoma City as a place in the Midwest, it is far more. The city is a lively place with art, culture, and an active social scene. For the individual traveling alone, this is truly a place to take it all in, and certainly meet new and interesting friends.
