Hartford, Connecticut is one the oldest cities in the United States, filled with culture and social dimension. It maintains an ¡°English flavor¡± with its narrow streets and parks. These narrow streets and parks make Hartford a highly navigable city that hosts some great historic spots, shopping centers, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Hartford often boasts that its historic locations are some the best maintained, and its arts and cultural centers hold a variety of pieces¡ªenough variety to please any visitor. Yet, the true joy of Hartford is that the single visitor can fully capture the feel and aroma of the city through solitary excursions. Exploring Hartford alone will let your imagination run, let you wander ¡°off track,¡± and enjoy the sites and hospitality at your own pace.
Key attractions in Hartford are the Stratford Antique Center, several historical houses located in the heart of the city, and the Crown Odyssey Giant Screen Theatre. The Stratford Antique Center boasts two hundred antique dealers under one roof. It is open year round, and the visitor will easily find unique and compelling finds on site¡ªanything from wing backed chairs, picture frames, water pictures, to candle holders. As for the Crown Odyssey Giant Screen Theatre, it is Hartford¡¯s first and only large screen venue. Crown uses the world¡¯s largest film format, and it regularly shows mainstream, specialty, and independent films. This theatre is an ideal spot to relax after a day of touring the city.
The Antique Center and Crown Theatre are excellent spots to shop and rest, but to truly see and understand Hartford you need to walk through its downtown district. Hartford is home to several historical homes¡ªthree of these being the Mark Twain House, the Noah Webster House, and the Harriet Beecher Stowe House. All three of these homes once housed substantial figures in American literary history. Noah Webster¡ªa school teacher¡ªstandardized US spelling books with his dictionary, Twain is the noted author of many southern based tales of whimsy and folklore, and Stowe penned Uncle Tom¡¯s Cabin. Ironically, the Stowe and Twain houses stand next to one another, and both author¡¯s captured southern society quite aptly even though they resided in the depths of New England. These three houses represent some of Hartford¡¯s local heritage, while displaying its connection to the larger national culture. These literary talents only represent a small fraction of the splendor found in Hartford. Other gems include the Museum of Connecticut history, which celebrates many substantial moments in early American history and the American Revolutionary War. A few blocks over from this Museum is the Connecticut Historical Society. Here, the visitor will find furniture displays and artwork from natives of the state. But, Hartford has one museum that truly sets it apart from the rest. This museum is the Wadsworth Athenaeum¡ªthe nation¡¯s oldest public art museum. Pieces featured here range from the 16th to the 20th centuries, and their beauty and splendor are truly amazing.
While traversing through downtown Hartford, you will not be able to miss many of the cultural symbols framing your path. The State Capitol building, with its white Connecticut marble, reminds the passerby that Hartford is a substantial center for politics, culture, and everyday life. Other sites that will catch your eye are the Bushnell Park Carousel, the Stone Field Sculpture, and ancient burial ground. Each of these attractions brings its own version of beauty and aesthetics to Hartford¡¯s cityscape, and the single visitor (or any visitor) will be able to take in their rapture and beauty quite easily.
