The Balboa Fun Zone is located on the Balboa Peninsula of Newport Beach. The fun zone has been in operation for over fifty years. With hot dog stands, a merry go round, and a Ferris wheel, the fun zone has an old boardwalk charm that is fast disappearing from the West Coast. You can catch the Catalina Flyer from the fun zone. The Balboa Island ferry is only fifty cents and will take you across the bay to charming Lido Isle. Lido Isle was established in 1928 and patterned after the Italian resort of Lido on the Adriatic Sea. The island is equipped with island paths called ¡®stradas¡¯ which make it easy for tourists to appreciate Lido¡¯s charming shops and tree-lined beauty.
San Juan Capistrano in south Orange County is the site of Mission San Juan Capistrano, founded on November first, 1776. The mission was founded by the Franciscan fathers; the land was worked by the Juaneno Indians. Orange County is also home to world class beaches. The Wedge in Newport Beach, with its high surf is a well-known haven for body surfers. Huntington Beach is a Mecca for surfers and the site of professional surfing events like the OP Pro, considered by many to be the most prestigious event in the sport.
Orange County is also a famous shopping destination. South Coast Plaza is the largest shopping center in Orange County. South Coast Plaza is the highest grossing mall on the United States. It is the home of such trendy, upscale vendors as Tiffany & Co, Gucci, Dior and Chanel. South Coast Plaza refers to itself as ¡®The Ultimate Shopping Resort¡¯. This is a fitting name; the mall is a paean to conspicuous consumption.
Orange County is also the home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, one of major leagues baseballs steadiest teams over the last few years. The Angels won the World Series in 2002 and the team and its owner have proven themselves committed to winning and there is a good chance they will remain perennial contenders. Edison field, where the Angels play, is a great, family friendly, stadium. There are batting cages, arcades and gourmet restaurants and of course, hot dogs and beer for the purist.
