Most adults in tourist-rich Orlando seem to have a kid or two around somewhere. But what if you¡¯re here by yourself? What are some things you can enjoy without company?
How about lounging around the water or even taking a swim?
That¡¯s something you often do alone anyway. And the area has great bodies of water.
For the more serious swimmer, the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress¡¯s main pool offers a dozen free-form waterfalls, two waterslides and a swim-through grotto (swimming through a cave).
Another serious pool is at the Orlando World Center Marriott Resort, where the main lagoon has waterfalls and a waterslide more than 100 feet long. There¡¯s also an indoor pool and six whirlpools for a total of more than one million gallons of water. Enjoy a light lunch at the Pavilion Pool Bar.
If you lounge by the pool at the Cypress Pointe Resort in Disney¡¯s Lake Buena Vista, you¡¯ll likely view a volcano erupt. Yes, a volcano, though it¡¯s only an eruption of water.
Floating down the 24,000-square-foot Lazy River Pool at the JW Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes Resort is another pleasure you can have by yourself. Alternately, you can grab an inner tube and gently glide under rope bridges and lush orange groves at ¡°The Springs.¡±
The International Drive Resort area has a variety of things to do alone. First, hop aboard the convenient I-RIDE Trolley service to see all that¡¯s along the famous Drive.
You might want to stop at an outlet mall or visit one of the designer boutiques along the trolley¡¯s route. The price is right here.
An attraction in itself is a new Ron Jon Surf Shop that features an island-look with authentic bamboo, sisal-rope structures, thatched roofs and sand-textured walkways. Visitors are greeted with real sand and a beach scene with a 1934-replica Ford Woody station wagon. You won¡¯t find just surfboards here, though you¡¯ll find plenty of them. There are also thousands of products associated with the sun and surf.
Another place to visit is Old Town in Kissimmee, which is the city closest to Walt Disney World. Old Town has 75 specialty shops, eight restaurants and 18 rides, many of them the old-fashioned kind such as wooden roller coasters and go karts. If you¡¯re here on a Saturday, you can check out the 30 or so classic cars on display every week.
Since you¡¯re alone, why not stay in shape during your visit here?
If you¡¯re not already a gym member, the local YMCA offers an A.W.A.Y. program allowing members to visit other gyms. Other workout places here such as Bally¡¯s offer similar arrangements. World Gym has a travel pass.
Many gyms here also issue day passes. A typical price is about $10. Cardio Club Fitness Center has a $10 pass. Celebration Health offers a two week new member trial pass for $80 that can be used at various hotels even if you¡¯re not staying there. Hotels also offer day use of their health facility for $25. That¡¯s the price at the Ritz-Carlton.
If you want a little pampering, get yourself to one of the dozens of spas in the area.
If your hotel does not have a spa, the Euro Day Spa & Salon is a good place to get relaxed, reenergized and rejuvenated. The spa in Winter Park is one of the area¡¯s oldest and best known.
For something else to do, check the newspaper or other listings to see what festivals are underway. Depending on the time of the year, Central Florida has dozens of festivals that celebrate African-American art, Hispanic music, flowers, strawberries, wine, beer and rodeo, and much more.
Improve your golf game? Many of the well-known courses offer private lessons to improve your swing and your score.
Do you fancy trying fishing? You can hire a guide to help you reel in bass.
You can learn to sky dive, select a stogie from the 1.5 million available at the Corona Cigar Company or get up in a parasail and fly gracefully over the many lakes in Central Florida - more ways to be alone and get away from the crowd.
