In 1955, Wallace Groves, from Virginia, designed and built Freeport, which is the capital of Grand Bahama Island, and the second most populated city in the Islands. Peterson Cay is just a mile off the southern shore of Grand Bahama Island.  It is the smallest National Park in the Bahamas, only 1 ? acres.  This area is excellent for diving and snorkeling.  Amidst the sunken rocks and corals, you can view schools of tropical fish, soft corrals, manta ray, and barracuda.

The Xanadu is a beach resort and marina on the southwest coast of the Island.  Xanadu offers 137 guest rooms with balconies and beautiful views and 49 large one-bedroom suites.  A large variety of water sports and attractions are available such as boat rides, scuba diving, parasailing, jet skiing, and windsurfing.

The Rand Memorial Nature Center is a 100-acre sanctuary dedicated to preserving the natural habitat.  One of the top features is the prized West Indian flamingos.  This bird is the national bird of the Bahamas.  The birds can be seen nesting around a pond located just inside the park.  Many other birds can be seen also such as Stripe-headed Tanagers, Antillean Peewee birds, Bahama Parrot, Red-legged Thrushes, and the Kirtlands Warbler.

One of the island's major attractions is a 12-acre garden, Garden of the Groves founded by Wallace and Georgette Groves.  It offers an awesome waterfalls and beautiful flowering shrubs.  The garden features over 10,000 trees and his home to many tropical birds.  You will also find footbridges, ornamental lawns, flowers, and borders.  There are also cockatoos, pygmy goats, American alligators, macaws, potbelly pigs, pigeons, raccoons and a children¡¯s playground.  Above the garden sits a chapel that overlooks the beauty of the garden.  At the entrance to the garden is the Palmetto Caf¨¦, which serves snacks and drinks.

The Casino and Resort at Bahamia offers cable TV, a safe, room service, restaurant on site, tennis courts, fitness center, whirlpool, golf course, bar and lounge, and pool.  The casino offers slots, dice and craps tables, blackjack tables, baccarat table, American roulette, video poker, horse racing machines and more. The Grand Bahama Museum displays exhibits pertaining to the history of Grand Bahama Island.  They have reconstructed caves, a marine exhibit, and artifacts from the Lucayan Indian culture.

The International Bazaar is a 10-acre complex featuring 90 shops, 13 restaurants, and 6 snack stores.  The Bazaar is divided into cultural sections representing India, the Orient, Africa, France, South America, the Bahamas, etc.  You can find bargains on many items such as French perfume, Rolex watches, cigars, leather goods, jewelry, and there is a Straw Market, where you can get local arts and crafts, and a perfume factory, where you can make and name your own perfume.  At the Perfume Factory of Fragrances you mix your own special fragrance or you can purchase a unique fragrance created and manufactured right on the premises. The Perfume Factory is located in a replica of an old Bahamian mansion.  During the free tour, which brings you behind the scenes of a perfume factory, you will have the chance to make your own unique fragrance and give it your own special name.  

Pinetree Stables has a 2 hour guided trail ride through Pine Forest.  You will ride past orange groves on the Cooper¡¯s Castle grounds, along the beach, and into the ocean.  The experienced rider can take a fast one-hour bush ride or enjoy the whole morning riding along the beach.

If you truly want to see the Tropical Paradise from a breathtaking vantage point try ¡°Skydive Bahamas.¡±  They offer tandem skydiving and training, which will allow you to jump with your instructor in just 20 minutes using a parachute built for two.  You will freefall for almost one minute before the chute opens and you fall safely for another five minutes to earth.  The view is awesome from this 11,000 feet drop.  And to prove to your family and friends that you actually jumped out of a plane and skydived they have professional videos and still photo cameras available.
