Although Branson, Missouri is known for its fabulous entertainment, shows, and music, children may not enjoy sitting still for more than an hour even if the shows are billed as "child friendly." Here are some ideas of attractions that should always please the younger members of the family.
Children and adults alike will enjoy Branson's sixty-one acre theme park called Silver Dollar City. The park has 17 rides, dozens of shops and restaurants, and 50 shows per day. There are two play areas in the park that were designed for children. They are called Geyser Gulch and Tom Sawyer's Landing, and offer various activities including a merry-go-round and an extensive sand playing area. Attractions at the park include thrill rides, a train ride, and more.
Children often enjoy the Grandfather's Mansion attraction where they walk through darkness at spots, and on slanted floors, trying not to become disoriented. For something a bit calmer, there is an Ozark steam train ride complete with train robbers. The ride lasts twenty minutes.
Another attraction at Silver Dollar City is an old Ozark homestead log cabin to explore and experience life in "the olden days." Animals and a one room school are located here as well. The Homestead Pickers even entertain guests from the front porch at this part of the park. This is found at Silver Dollar City's Town Square along with other attractions including The Wilderness Church.
Silver Dollar City also offers a nighttime attraction called Celebration City. There are rides specifically for children, games, roller coasters, mini golf, and more. A laser show is presented every night and lots of great park food is available.
A tour of Marvel Cave is included with your Silver Dollar City ticket. The cave tour has a duration of one hour. Other caves and caverns near Branson are the Talking Rocks Cavern and the Indian Creek Caverns.
The Showboat Branson Belle offers a cruise, show, and meal all in one package. Children love paddleboats, and this is no exception. Families will most likely want to do a noon or early dinner (4 p.m.) cruise. Entertainment is available for families and children on these early cruises.
White Water is a great place for families and kids to visit in the summertime at Branson. Since this is a water park, it is only open from late May until Labor Day. Try the Raging River Rapids for a slide with a 400 foot drop. Spend some time on the 20,000 sq. foot RainTree Island for hours of water-playing fun. Water slides and rides include the Bermuda Triangle, Tropical Twister, Caribbean Plunge, and the Paradise Plunge. Ride the waves in tubes or by body surfing at the Surfquake wave pool. There are areas here specifically for kids and younger tots as well.
Open March through December, guests to Branson will enjoy an eighty minute ride on a renovated WWII era amphibious vehicle at Ride the Ducks. The captains on these cruises are with the United States Coast Guard and the water part of the cruise is given on Table Rock Lake. The land part of the tour includes seeing some highlights of Branson including Table Rock Dam and Country Music Boulevard. Children will especially enjoy the wacky quacker noisemaker that is provided free, allowing guests to manufacture their own part of the fun.
When it's time for dinner, children should enjoy Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede Dinner Show. This four course meal is accompanied by pre-show entertainment one hour before show time. The horses used in the show are on display every day from 10:00 a.m. until it is time for the show. In addition to the horses, there is a light and sound show in which pyrotechnics are used.
Branson Scenic Railway is a 40 mile trip through the foothills of the Ozarks, over bridges, and through tunnels will be fun for children and adults alike. Tours begin in March of each year. The round trip takes an hour and forty-five minutes.
While many of the performances in Branson may not be suitable for children for one reason or another, young people may enjoy Red Skelton: A Performance Tribute by Tom Millica. This two hour show is given at 10:00 a.m. every day but Sunday. Millica was a personal friend to Red Skelton and this show is always a crowd pleaser.
Children always enjoy the Ripley's Believe It or Not of Branson, too. The outside of the building looks as if it has been split in half by an earthquake. Ripley's is open year round but closed for a period of time in January for maintenance.
A few museums in Branson that children may enjoy are the Hollywood Wax Museum, The Roy Rogers ¨C Dale Evans Museum, the World's Largest Toy Museum, and the American Presidential Museum.
Some attractions in Branson do not remain in operation throughout the cold Missouri winter. Be sure to check availability of the attractions you wish to visit if your trip will be during the off-season. |
