Whether looking for indoor activities or out, families with children will find many things to see and do in Colorado. 

*Animals

Kids and animals, what could be a more natural combination? In Colorado there are several places to find it: zoos, an aquarium, a butterfly house, and a sample farm.

-Colorado has three zoos. The southernmost one is in Pueblo. Although this zoo is small, it is a good one for children to visit. It has hands-on exhibits, an area with domesticated animals that children are allowed to feed (special food is available for purchase), and hundreds of animals.

-Colorado Springs is home to the only mountain zoo in the United States. This zoo, situated on Cheyenne Mountain, houses twice the number of animals as the zoo in Pueblo. Besides the animals, families can enjoy many seasonal attractions. There are picnic areas, a carousel, a train built for youngsters, and a tram that will take you and your family up and down the mountainside and around the zoo.

-The largest zoo in Colorado is in the capital city, Denver. This eighty-acre zoo has nearly 4000 animals, many in natural habitats. The zoo is home to over one hundred endangered and extinct-in-the-wild species. Most kids enjoy watching when the animals are fed, and this zoo provides a schedule of many of their feedings. It also offers carousel rides, train rides, and a shuttle around the zoo. 

-Denver is also home to an aquarium. The aquarium has three exhibits filled with animals. One takes you down the Colorado River, through the desert, and, finally, into the sea. Along the way you will learn about the fish and other animals (toads, crabs, beavers, etc.) that rely on the Colorado River for life.  Another takes you from the mountains of Indonesia, through rainforest, and out to the ocean as you follow the Kampar River. See shark and Sumatran tigers along the way. The third section is a restful cove with sea otters. The aquarium also offers behind-the-scenes tours for older children and adults. These tours must be booked in advance.

-Butterflies, spiders, and giant insects - you¡¯ll see all of these at the Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster, just outside of Denver. Wander the paths through the Conservatory to watch hundreds of butterflies flit among the trees and flowers. Wear bright colors to increase the chances of having a butterfly land on you. In another room, reach into the tide-pools to pet star fish and sea cucumbers. In yet another room, take a turn holding a tarantula. Watch the activity and honey making of the bees in a glass-enclosed hive. See beetles and spiders and roaches. Then move on to the animatronic exhibit. There, you and your children will experience a typical backyard ¨C from the perspective of a small insect. Blades of grass tower over you as you watch ants, mantis and other bugs as they move to accomplish an insect task (communication, eating, flying, etc.).  End the day with a walk along the outdoor nature trail. 

-The small farm is disappearing from the American landscape. Take advantage of the city of Fort Collins¡¯s sample farm and experience what these farms are like. This is a working farm with cows, ponies, sheep, goats, pigs, and more. It is not a petting zoo, though many of the animals may allow you to pet them. 

Visit the museum to learn about farms and farming equipment used throughout the past century. Enjoy a family hayride, or a trail ride along the Poudre River. On weekends, lead your child on a pony ride around the corral.

The Farm is located in Lee Martinez Park. The park also has a playground, basketball and tennis courts, and a sheltered picnic area. The Farm is open year round, though the Silo Store (at which you can purchase grain to feed the animals) is closed from late October through mid-March.

*Caves

Although there are many caves throughout Colorado¡¯s Rocky Mountains, few are navigable without a basic knowledge of caving. Two that are, however, are Cave of the Winds and Glenwood Caverns. Both of these cave systems offer family tours through their underground terrain. See stalagmites and stalactites. Learn what bacon and ribbons are when they¡¯re found in caves. Discover for yourself why caving is growing in popularity. 

-On the western slope of the Colorado Rockies, not far from Aspen, you will find the mountain town of Glenwood Springs. Enjoy spectacular views as you take the Iron Mountain tram to the top of the peak. Disembark and begin your underground adventure through Glenwood Caverns. 

-Cave of the Winds, in Manitou Springs, is also surrounded by fantastic views. If you visit Cave of the Winds between Memorial and Labor Days, be sure to enjoy the laser show afterwards. A canyon wall serves as a screen for this nightly show, truly a one-of-a-kind experience. 

*U.S. Mint

Treat your children to an education in both civics and finance by taking a tour of the United States Mint in Denver. This is a rare opportunity, as there are only three federal mints in the U.S. View the steps necessary to producing coins. Learn the history of the U.S. Mint and the treasury department. See a display of gold bars signifying the Denver Mint¡¯s importance as a gold repository.

Tours for the Denver Mint must be planned well in advance. Families need to contact their Congressperson¡¯s office for sponsorship. For each person who will be going on the tour, you must provide the legal name, date of birth, and social security number. This is necessary in order to obtain the proper security clearances. The U.S. Mint recommends contacting the Congressional office six weeks before you would like to take the tour.

*Dinosaurs

Few children can resist the lure of prehistoric creatures; giant animals that wandered the world, seemingly able to crush anything in their paths. Take your kids on an educational journey, one where they¡¯ll learn what dinosaurs were really like and how big they really were. Colorado boasts several places for such an adventure.

-Denver Museum of Nature and Science: 

This museum has a large exhibit of prehistory. It begins 3.5 billion years ago and brings you forward through time, past ancient sea creatures, past giant bugs, and, finally, to the dinosaurs. The exhibit includes hands-on learning opportunities. This museum also has several other ongoing exhibits, an IMAX theater, and a planetarium.

-Museum of Western Colorado:

This museum has two major dinosaur attractions: Dinosaur Journey and Dino Digs.

Dinosaur Journey is located in this museum¡¯s Fruita, Colorado location. It includes robotic dinosaurs, exhibitions of current dinosaur digs, and a laboratory where you can see paleontologists working with fossils.

Dino Digs are working vacations put together by the museum. On these vacations you and your family will learn how to excavate and prepare dinosaur bones at a real excavation site. Most of these vacations are multiple days, though the museum sometimes offers day trips as well. This is a great experience for the entire family.

-Dinosaur National Monument:

Though the main visitors¡¯ center is located in Colorado, this National Park covers space in both Utah and Colorado. The Dinosaur Quarry, filled with dinosaur bones, is just a 30 minutes drive from the main visitors¡¯ center. Dinosaur National Monument has set up several activities designed for children, including Junior Ranger and Junior Paleontologist programs. 

-Dinosaur Ridge:

This walking tour takes you and your family along a trail where you¡¯ll see dinosaur tracks, fossils and bones still in the rock walls, and signs posted along the way to explain what you¡¯re seeing. You may take the self-guided tour, or, with advanced reservations, sign up for a guided tour. Dinosaur Ridge is located west of Denver.

*Restaurant

Imagine a place where children are encouraged to play, where they can explore caves and mines. A place with shows that the entire family can enjoy: cliff divers, fire jugglers, a western shoot out, and more. That¡¯s exactly what you¡¯ll find at Casa Bonita. 

Casa Bonita is a Mexican restaurant in Lakewood, near Denver. It caters to families and is regularly filled with both locals and tourists. There is almost always a wait for a table, but, especially for families with energetic kids, the wait will be worth it. The food choices are simple ¨C perfect for youngsters, and the waitstaff are easy to flag down, literally. Each table has a small flag that can be raised whenever service is required. If you are looking for a dinner experience that the kids can share, this is it.

*** In order to maximize your enjoyment, please remember that Colorado has a high elevation (the capital¡¯s nickname is The Mile High City). If you are not used to high elevations, drink lots of water throughout your stay to minimize the risk of altitude sickness. Colorado¡¯s weather changes often; it is a good idea to dress in layers and to always have a jacket handy. If you follow this advice your time in Colorado should be filled with fun.***
