Milwaukee, located along the shores of Lake Michigan in southeastern Wisconsin, is one of the larger cities in the country. Just like most other large cities, there is a wide variety to see and do for people of all ages. Here are a few of the things to see and do when in Milwaukee with children.
The Milwaukee County Zoo is one of the larger zoos in the country. It is home to animals of all different kids from kangaroos in Australia to the elephants in Africa. The zoo also offers both camel and elephant rides for the young ones and has a small ride area with a merry-go-round with more than just horses and the zoo train, which is a small scale train that makes its rounds through the zoo offering another perspective. There is also a petting zoo and sea lion show along with special exhibits that change each year.
Milwaukee is also home to the first urban indoor water park called Paradise Landing. This water park is associated with the Milwaukee Hilton and park admission is included with your stay. You can also attend the park even if you are not staying at the Hilton. There are numerous water slides, a kiddy pool with accessories, a lily pad walk and water cannons. There is also a hydro-spa for the adults. Cabana Cove is a restaurant that offers both snacks and meals while you are there.
For those who enjoy ice skating, Milwaukee is home to the Olympic speed skating training facility known as Petit National Ice Center. The Petit offers open public skating each day on the speed skating ring for all ages with skate rental available. It is also home to several children¡¯s hockey teams that practice and play on the two hockey rinks nestled inside of the speed skating ring. They also offer public access for speed skating events as well as others.
Discovery World Museum is a great place for kids. This children¡¯s museum has over 150 interactive exhibits that teach kids about science and other educational lessons. The theater offers educational shows that demonstrate scientific experiments for the kids. School groups visit this museum throughout the year.
Another children¡¯s museum in Milwaukee is the Betty Brinn Children¡¯s Museum. This museum also offers education exhibits some of which are interactive. The Betty Brinn Museum offers children a look into different aspects of life that they may wish to pursue when they get older. One area of the museum allows children to role play different jobs that they wish to get into when they get older. There are also exhibits that show them how their bodies work and how things such as sound get to our ears and are heard.
Each summer, the Barnum and Bailey Ringling Brother¡¯s Circus comes to town. The circus wagons are put out for exhibit along the lake front for all to view. During the time that the circus is here, they put on the Great Circus Parade. Milwaukee residents and visitors line the streets of downtown to watch the circus wagons, animals, horses, clowns and marching bands. This parade has come to be a big tradition for Milwaukee.
Located within the Public Museum is the IMAX Theater. This theater offers different movies over the course of the year. This is a six story 275 seat dome theater. Watching shows on the enormous screen is truly an experience. Viewers almost feel as if they are in the movie.
In addition to these bigger activities, there are also smaller things to do that are located throughout Milwaukee and the surrounding area. These smaller things include things such as miniature golf, local parks, local public pools, and small church festivals throughout the summer season. Milwaukee offers plenty to do for those who have children. |
