Kids are usually excited to have an opportunity to go to Hawaii, but it helps after arrival to have a list of activities that will be of interest to the whole family and especially the younger members.
If the kids are wound up from a plane trip or from being cooped up in a hotel room, a good place to get some exercise and sunshine is the state monument of Diamond Head. Maybe on approach, the kids will think they see diamonds glittering, just as late 18th century sailors did, thus giving Diamond Head its name. The children might be interested in knowing that this monument is a tuff cone, formed by volcanic eruptions very long ago. Seeing this will involve a hike, so be sure the family is wearing proper foot gear. Hours are 6:30 in the morning until 6:00 p.m. and it is found between Makapu'u and 18th Avenue off Diamond Head Road.
Children should enjoy the hike to the top. There are two tunnels on the way, and benches for resting. Visitors who take a flashlight are always glad they did because the tunnels are dark. The hike is definitely worth the effort to get to the top. Seeing Honolulu from atop Diamond Head is a sight never to be forgotten. (Don't forget the camera and video cam!)
From the top of Diamond Head to under water? For a tour that most likely will not be found elsewhere, and a once in a lifetime experience, try the Atlantis Adventure. Children will most likely be thrilled to find out that this attraction offers a real honest-to-goodness submarine tour. There are some restrictions to check on first, however, to avoid disappointment later. These tours have height restrictions, so the youngest of children will not be able to do the tour. Most of the limits are 36 inches for height. The submarine dives to a depth of more than a hundred feet and the views of underwater life are incredible. Atlantis Adventure check-in ticket booth is found at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Tower.
Sea Life Park, found at 41 - 202 Kalanianaole Highway, offers just what the name suggests, sea life! The varied marine animals, birds, and fish to be seen here includes tropical fish, sharks, sea lions, sea turtles, stingrays, dolphins, and sea birds. Guests can just watch the shows or get more interactive by swimming with the dolphins, walking underwater in a reef aquarium, or swim in the Stingray Lagoon.
If more marine themed activities are on the agenda, the Waikiki Aquarium is located at 2777 Kalakaua Avenue. This aquarium has been in operation since 1919 and is a part of the University of Hawaii. They offer over 400 species of aquatic plant and animal life.
Another great thing to do with kids in the Honolulu area is the Honolulu Zoo. The location is the corner of Kalakaua and Kapahulu Avenues. The zoo covers forty-two acres. Plan to spend at least a couple of hours seeing this impressive showing of birds, reptiles, and mammals.
The National Park Service offers a special program at the Arizona Memorial (The Pearl Harbor site). The Junior Ranger program here uses a booklet that not only helps children learn the significance of this National Memorial, but also helps them to learn what happened to America on December 7, 1941. Find this Memorial overlooking Pearl Harbor off of Highway 99 (the Kamehameha Highway). Expect extra and strict security checks here.
The Kualoa Ranch and Activity Club, besides the unmatched beauty of some breathtaking views, offers outdoor activities for lots of exercise. Be advised that there are age restrictions on some of the activities, however. Also, there is a gun range. Age restrictions are: 10 and over for horseback riding, 16 and over for the ATV riding (signed waiver necessary here), 16 and over for the gun range, and kayaking to the Secret Island is for ages 12 and over to go alone, and no age limit if going with an adult. There are also tours of Tropical Gardens and the Ranch and movie set. Check into the activity packages they offer if this is of interest. Find Kualoa Ranch at 49 - 560 Kamehameha Highway.
The Children's Discovery Center at 111 Ohe Street finds children doing all kinds of interactive activities. The Center is open every day except Mondays. The hours are rather short at 9:00 until 1:00 Tuesday through Friday and 10:00 until 3:00 on weekends.
Sitting on over 40 acres with the address of 55 - 370 Kamehameha Highway is the Polynesian Cultural Center. This is one of the top attractions of the island. Children will enjoy attending a luau, but there are also displays of villages here that teach what life is like on the various Pacific Islands, and special shows that are presented.
At the Alii Luau, expect to be greeted by being given a flower lei. What is a trip to Hawaii without that special touch, after all! There will be shows happening, such as hula dances and Hawaiian music. Children are often invited to join the entertainers on stage. The luau buffet is all you can eat, of course! |
