CENTRAL PARK: Don¡¯t leave New York without seeing it! Your kids will love a ride on the antique carousel with extra-large horses, a tour through the Children¡¯s Zoo featuring interactive exhibits, or a horse-and-carriage ride through the beautiful greenery. But one of the best-kept secrets of Central Park is the Rustic Playground (also known as the Billy Johnson Playground). Located in the southern end of the park along E. 67th Street, this playground features (among other things) a 45-foot long granite slide built into a rocky hill. Your kids will want to zip down the smooth, cool surface again and again. Since it is a free attraction, you won¡¯t mind a bit; you might even feel tempted to join them. Go ahead! This magnificent slide is fun for all ages!
NY WATERWAY: Take a sightseeing cruise down the Hudson River in the fall, or the Sleepy Hollow Cruise, and drift past the charming home of author Washington Irving. There are a variety of boat rides to choose from, all of which feature spectacular views.
FAO SHWARTZ: This New York toy store on 5th Avenue near Central Park is a blast! You don¡¯t even have to buy anything. Samples of toys and video games are available for testing all over the store, in a bright and colorful atmosphere.
CHELSEA PIERS: You can¡¯t beat 30 waterfront acres of recreational fun for all ages. Older kids may enjoy such activities as rock climbing, skate boarding, or hit the batting cages. Infants and toddlers will enjoy exploring the wide spaces of the well-padded Open Toddler Gym. Mom or dad might even want to slip away to the golf club complete with state-of-the-art simulators.
LAZER PARK: For the techno-enthusiasts, this is no ordinary arcade. It is one of the top laser tag arenas in the country, located right in Time Square in Manhattan. Lazer Park also offers virtual reality and arcade games. The futuristic atmosphere will excite even the most passive sci-fi fan.
BROOKLYN CHILDREN¡¯S MUSEUM: The first museum made for children in America is just a short subway hop from Manhattan to 145 Brooklyn Avenue. This museum has been delighting children since 1899 with hands-on exhibits, shows, crafts, and a host of other activities. Your kids will be having so much fun they won¡¯t even realize that they are learning something. There are even special areas designated for safe play for babies and toddlers, making it a great spot for families with children of various ages.
MANHATTAN BEACH: Also located in Brooklyn, this is a family friendly beach excellent for summer fun. There are life guards on duty, snack bars, and a huge, colorful playground. The playground features several areas to cater to different ages, including a jungle gym ship and a fenced in toddler safe area with pint-sized equipment. If you get tired of the ocean waves, your kids can still get wet splashing around in the playground¡¯s palm tree sprinkler. Nearby, on Emmons Avenue in Sheepshead Bay, there are fishing boat tours that offer half and full day trips (equipment can be rented), and a host of sea food restaurants and clam bars. If sea food is not your thing, stop at the walk-by window at Roll-N-Roaster for their famous gravy-dipped roast beef sandwich on a kaiser roll and cheese fries.
AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY: If you have a child who is wild about dinosaurs, you will want to head to 79th Street and Central Park West to the place voted the #1 tourist attraction in NY, and #3 in America. Their fossil collection is the largest in the world, with over 600 specimens on view. There is also a discovery room that any budding scientist will appreciate, a room full of meteors, minerals and gemstones, and the Hall of Ocean Life where you can have refreshments sitting under a 94-foot-long model of a lifelike blue whale that is suspended from the ceiling. On your way out, don¡¯t forget to stop in the Big Dipper Ice Cream Caf¨¦, located on the lower level near the food court, for a sweet treat.
LOWER EAST SIDE TENEMENT MUSEUM: Kids will love exploring history by living it on the ¡°Confino Family Apartment¡± tour. Based on an immigrant family, a guide in costume greets visitors as if they were immigrants just off the boat. She walks them through the hands-on apartment museum as she explains to them how to adapt to America. The tour even offers the opportunity to dress up in period clothing. Warning¨C book this popular tour in advance!
THE BRONX ZOO: Easily accessible by bus, subway and car, this wildlife preserve is home to over 4,000 animals. When you enter Jungle World, a 37,000 foot recreation of an Asian rain forest, you will feel as though you have been transported to the other side of the world. Watch the big cats frolic from a tram car that shoots across their habitat, or take a cable car high above the zoo. There is so much to see that when you leave you will already be planning your next visit.
THE NEW YORK AQUARIUM: Located in Brooklyn on Surf Avenue and West 8th Street in Brooklyn, this aquarium features many hands-on, interactive activities for children, including a touch tank. See beluga whales, sea otters, penguins, sharks, and enjoy shows featuring sea lions and atlantic bottle-nosed dolphins. The aquarium lies right on the edge of the beach, so if it¡¯s hot and all that water begins to look good, you can go for a swim. You also might be tempted to visit the aquarium¡¯s next-door neighbor: Brooklyn¡¯s own historic landmark and amusement park: Coney Island.
CONEY ISLAND: See for yourself why Nathan¡¯s franks are famous, and why the Cyclone still ranks among the world¡¯s scariest roller coasters. Try your hand at games of skill or chance to win giant sized prizes, see a sideshow on the seaside, or, if you dare, ride through Dante¡¯s Inferno haunted house. Astroland amusement park at Coney Island offers a POP (pay one price) deal so kids can ride most attractions as many times as they like. |
