Planning a family vacation can, at times, seem overwhelming. Researching tourist information in order to include appropriate attractions that would include the children in your family can be quite time-consuming. If you*re considering a vacation in Indiana this year, you*ll save yourself a lot of time and energy in your planning stages by checking out these activity suggestions. There*s probably a lot more to do in the Hoosier State than you would have thought!
The Children*s Museum of Indianapolis is dedicated to providing exploration opportunities for children in the areas of history, art and culture, as well as the physical and natural sciences. This huge facility 每 sitting on 14 acres of land 每 provides extensive exhibits, many of which are interactive. Among their many displays, you*ll find SpaceQuest Planetarium, Mysteries in History and the Carousel of Wishes and Dreams. Also on exhibit are Lilly Theater, The Biotech Learning Center and Playscape (offered for preschool children and their parents who*d like to spend some playtime together). This could easily be made into a full-day experience for those families who wish to take advantage of all that the museum has to offer.
Santa Claus, Indiana is home to Holiday World 每 a great family fun park which has rides and attractions that are suitable for the entire family. For adults and children who are old enough to be beyond the ※kiddie ride§ stage, the park offers rides such as Paul Revere*s Midnight Ride, Virginia Reel, Thunder Bumpers, The Legend and Eagle*s Flight, among others. For younger kids, there*s a special area in the park called ※Rudolph*s Reindeer Ranch,§ including rides such as Seahorses, Indian River, Salmon Run and Rockets, to name a few. A unique addition to this park is a 3-acre complex that*s dedicated to providing activities for adults and children to enjoy together, in an interactive setting. Some of the highlights of this complex (called Holidog*s Fun Town) are The Howler, Magic Waters and Doggone Trail 每 just for starters. All in all, Holiday World is a great place for the family to play 每 separately or as a group.
If your family is interested in water themed parks, then be sure to visit Deep River Waterpark - located in Merrillville. In addition to a number of body and tube slides, the park also offers Water Wars 每 an interactive water game for the entire family; beach volleyball; The Bayou River Ride 每 an 800-foot long tubing experience; a wave pool and Paddles* Play Zone. There are a number of refreshment areas throughout the park, including Captain Fun*s Pizza Palace, The Surfside Caf谷 and Milo*s Ice Cream Shop, to name a few. For a great day, chock full of outdoor fun, bring the kids to Deep River Waterpark 每 and don*t forget the sunscreen!
Melchior Marionette Theater 每 in Nashville, Indiana 每 is a wonderful little theater, which delights up to 50 people during each show. While the seating is minimal, the shows are fantastic and are sure to please kids of all ages. Performances such as The Slightly Haunted Puppet Studio and Peewinkle*s Holiday Cabaret are performed by talented puppeteers, who keep the kids enthralled through the use of their magical marionettes. If your vacation coincides with holiday time, be sure to see Christmas at the Puppet Studio, which takes place during the month of December and includes a holiday puppet show, full of lively singing and audience participation.
In Starlight, Indiana, you*ll find Joe Huber*s Family Farm 每 a wonderful agricultural attraction that caters to kids as well as grown-ups. To start, you can either pick your own fruit as you walk along through the orchards or perhaps, take a guided wagon ride. Since Huber*s offers a wide range of vegetables and fruits, you*ll have quite a variety from which to choose. Next, take a stroll through the gardens for a bit of quiet relaxation before visiting the Farm Market and Gift Shop. Among the many delectable items that are for sale are candy, cheese and jams. An added bonus is the live entertainment that*s offered during the weekends from Memorial Day until the end of October. If all of that fruit picking has given you an appetite, the Huber Restaurant is right next door, offering honey ham, chicken and homemade cobblers to their hungry guests.
While you*re in Starlight, be sure to visit The Forest Discovery Center. In an attempt to teach kids the importance of trees, this facility provides a gorgeous indoor forest coupled with a mural that*s been created using small wood inlays 每 and it*s a whopping 1000 square feet in size! As if that*s not enough, visitors are treated to a peek at the rough mill, where they can watch logs go through the process of becoming wood trim and moulding. Live workshops will be taking place, in order to give kids an opportunity to see demonstrations of woodworking techniques, as well as a theater with a short movie featuring Oakie Acorn. Don*t forget to make a stop at the gift shop, where you*ll find magnificent souvenirs that have been crafted from The Forest Discovery Center*s wood!
Marengo Cave, a national landmark located in Marengo, Indiana, offers two guided tour packages for visitors 每 The Crystal Palace Tour (guides will take you on a 40 minute walking tour to see formations and flowstone deposits, ending in a spectacular light display in the Crystal Palace); and The Dripstone Trail Tour (a 70 minute walking tour that highlights unique formations and stalagmites, featuring the Penny Ceiling). Both tours are led at a leisurely pace, so keeping up shouldn*t be a problem. In addition to the cave formations, you*ll also spy a number of cave creatures, such as cave beetles, spiders, salamanders, white-footed mice, cave rats and bats. Families are invited to enjoy the gemstone mining activities, as well as the gift shop and cave simulator, called The Crawl. Refreshments can be found at The Cave Caf谷, for those who need a bit of a rest and a bite to eat.
French Lick, Indiana is where you*ll find The Indiana Railway Museum. Tour the exhibits, which include a caboose and several steam and diesel trains. Afterward, take the family on a train ride, offering nearly two hours of beautiful Indiana scenery. Your trip will take you through the Hoosier National Forest and on through the Burton Tunnel 每 2200 feet of railway excitement. The end of your journey will bring you near Patoka Lake, in Cuzco. The museum has a gift shop on site, and there*s a snack bar car that runs with all departing trains. This tourist spot will thrill the kids and add some great photos to the scrapbook!
