In the beautiful state of Kentucky, Louisville has much to offer in the way of family activities.  If you are planning a family vacation, this is a spot to consider.  Everyone will find something of interest. There is something for those who love animals, sports, and something even for those who love the thrills and chills of riding a roller coaster.

The Louisville Zoo offers animal lovers the chance to see the tiger triplets.  What makes these tigers so special is that they were born at the zoo.  The Gorilla Forest allows visitors and up close and personal glimpse into the life of the gorillas.  While in the Gorilla Forest, you can explore Discovery Trail or watch the pygmy hippopotamus at Hippo Falls.  There are many great exhibits, and the zoo is well shaded so you are not exposed to the heat.  If the adults need to rest, there is a playground for the kids outside of Gorilla Forest.  The adults can sit in the shade while their little ones run and play.  

If you don't mind driving about 25 miles to Shelbyville, Kentucky, you can visit Buffalo Crossings.  It is a 1000 acre working buffalo ranch.  There is a colorful playground for the kids and a petting zoo which includes calves, donkeys, Chinese chickens, goats and rabbits.  A trolley ride takes you through the ranch where you can see the buffalo as well as camels, llamas, and other animals.  There are reproductions of 18th century cabins and a restaurant that serves of course, buffalo meat.  Be sure and try a buffalo burger (less calories and fat than chicken).  You will be glad that you did. 

For the more sports minded individual, Louisville has two great attractions, The Louisville Slugger Museum and the Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs.  At the Louisville Slugger Museum, you are greeted by a bat that stands 7 stories high. One of the highlights of the museum is the factory tour.  There are guides that lead you step-by-step through the bat making process.  The actual museum tells the story of the Louisville Slugger, as well as that of the history of baseball.  Some of the highlights of the museum are the wall of autographs, a bat autographed and used by Babe Ruth, and the free miniature bat given at the end of the tour.  You can also purchase bats and have them engraved while you are touring the museum. 

If you like the sport of horse racing, The Kentucky Derby Museum has artifacts on display from the Derby's grand history.  They offer hands on displays as well as video graphics.  Visitors can tour the Churchill Downs stables and infield, as well as view the grandstand, finish line, and winners circle. 

The adventurous will want to head to Six Flags and ride the roller coasters and water rides.  There is a section for smaller children so that they can enjoy the thrill of rides, but on a smaller scale.  They can also meet Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and all of their favorite Loony Toon Characters.  Six Flags is great place to spend the day and let yourself be a kid again.
