As a person who was born and raised in Philadelphia, I can personally attest to the fact that Philly really loves her visitors, and particularly, kids. Now, as a parent with children of my own, I can honestly say that I love taking my son and daughter to Philly. I know it will turn out to be a great day of fun for all of us.
Philadelphia, whose name means City of Brotherly Love, is actually one of the oldest cities in the United States. Founded in 1681 by William Penn, Philadelphia is also one of the largest cities, both in area and population - and to this day, it is still considered a cultural haven for history, arts and sports buffs alike. Philly was even once the capital of the United States in the days proceeding America's War for Independence. To say that Philly has a lot to offer is just the tip of the iceberg.
For example, if you wanted to start your New Year's Day off with a huge and happy celebration, there is nothing so steeped in tradition as the Mummers' Parade. Stemming from a European tradition of welcoming the New Year in with masquerading, music and party-going, the Mummers' Parade had its beginning in the late 17th century. By 1888, the first actual forms of the parade were in motion, as opposed to the door to door revelry, and the famous Comics and Fancies divisions were born.
If your children have never been to a parade before, this is a really special one to see for their first one. Snaking through Philly, your kids can enjoy the zaniness of the Comics division, the beauty and spectacle of the Fancies division and the joyous strutting and dancing of the world-renown String Band division.
If you are looking for other great things to do with kids, think about sports. Philly's got it all. There is the Eagles (pro football), the Flyers (pro ice hockey), the 76ers (pro basketball) and the phantastic Phillies (pro baseball.)
Philly also has the Kixx (soccer), the Charge (women's soccer), the Philly Soul (arena football, owned in part by rock star Jon Bon Jovi), the Phantoms (American League ice hockey) and the Wings (lacrosse). Additionally, there are collegiate teams for just about any sport you can imagine.
If you have kids that enjoy learning about history, then Philly is the place to be. A major seat for the Revolutionary War, you can visit the colonial places that tell the story in a visually exciting way. History comes alive when you take your children to visit Independence Hall. It is now part of the Independence National Historical Park, administered by the National Parks Association. This is the place where the Founding Fathers, like Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, penned the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution and other famous documents. In this park, you can also visit such places of Early American importance and significance as Carpenters Hall, the Liberty Bell Center, the Old City Hall, the Betsy Ross House and quite a number of other buildings that played an essential part in the founding of this country.
Do your children like museums? Philly's got some seriously impressive and kid-oriented ones. The biggest, of course, are located on the Parkway, but there are also other interesting ones scattered throughout the city. To highlight just a few of the most fascinating ones, let's first talk about The Franklin Institute.
Paying homage to inventor, statesman, publisher, writer, ambassador and Philly native Benjamin Franklin, this museum has it all! It is a hands-on kind of museum with permanent and visiting exhibits that will thrill everyone in the family. I remember going to the Franklin Institute when I was a child, and the wonder and excitement of the electricity exhibit, riding an old time locomotive and watching the stars and planets in the Planetarium still holds true today. Kids can view the universe through telescopes, learn interactively about the human body and take part in demonstrations about weather. Displays like this and more are abundant throughout this museum.
Philly also has the Museum of Natural Sciences, where, among other exhibits, kids can see their old time favorite creatures - the dinosaurs. There is also the Philly Please Touch Museum, which, as the name implies, is truly a museum for the kids. (Adults have fun there too, though!)
For world famous works of art, few museums can surpass the Philadelphia Art Museum. It has some of the most awe-inspiring collections of art anywhere. And if fantastic painting, drawings and sculpture aren't enough, there are those famous steps that movie character Rocky ran up and down during his training to be a world class boxer. Your kids can do the steps too, like Rocky, while you will enjoy seeing the gorgeous vista from the museum, of the river with its competitive and classically famous scullers.
If your children like the very unusual and different, you might want to consider taking the kids to see Eastern State Penitentiary, which was the site of an early but extremely progressive prison (for its time, anyway), and is now a museum about the same. If you want to take unusual to the next level, your kids will love the Mutter Museum. This peculiar Philly institution is all about medicine - but weird medicine. All kinds of things from bizarre medical instruments to pathological and anatomical specimens prevail at this one-of-a-kind venue. It may be gross and icky - but your kids will adore it!
Philadelphia offers the very first zoo in the United States. The Philly Zoo, a huge home and refuge to over 1,600 animals is kid-accessible and kid-friendly. There are indoor and outdoor naturalistic habitats for the animals at this zoo, which feature Rare Mammals, Reptilian exhibits, woodland homes for the big cats, and the ever-popular elephant plains. Peacocks strut the grounds just so that you can see them up close and in person. Picture taking opportunities abound here. And, this just barely touches on everything this zoo has to offer. With a spacious children's zoo on the grounds, a monorail for traveling aerially throughout the park and even a mock-up of a rain forest, you will get a real feel for the way that animals from all around the world live.
If you are looking for wandering and taking in the sights, finding interesting and out-of-the-way restaurants and shops, you can go to places like the Italian Market, South Street, and Penn's Landing. The choices are numerous - and you never know when you'll find live entertainment - right out on the street.
While in Philly, you cannot forget to enjoy the celebrated munchies! Your kids will love partaking of Philly's most famous foods too, which you can find all over the city. Don't forget to try the fabulous Philly cheesesteaks, hoagies, water ice, oddly shaped soft pretzels (with mustard!) and TastyCake. These are all yummy and your kids will thank you for the treat!
If you like the outdoors, then there are more great places to go. Fairmount Park, Philadelphia's famed park is one of the oldest parks in the country and it is absolutely the largest one too. There are many historical landmarks contained within this lovely park, including a number of restored colonial and Early American mansions. Famous statues (like Rodin's The Thinker) can be found there, too. The Philly Zoo is even part of it.
And if your kids like theater, they will really enjoy Playhouse in the Park, which is another part of this all-encompassing recreational area. Besides having performances of well-known Broadway and Off-Broadway type shows, Playhouse in the Park has a children's theater program too. My mother and grandmother used to take me there when I was small, and to this day, I credit my love of theater back to the shows that I saw there as a child.
Lastly, if you are staying in Philly for a few days, there are a couple of side trips, just outside of the city that are very worthwhile for a visit if you have kids. Longwood Gardens are a spectacular setting of some of the most beautiful gardens in the world. With indoor and outdoor pavilions, formal Italian gardens and an amazing conservatory, it is not to be missed.
Another day trip just outside the city limits - and this is probably one of the most fun for the little ones - is Sesame Place, in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. Rides, shows and water adventures are everywhere at this exhilarating amusement park. Visits from the Sesame Street characters highlight a trip to the place, too. The wee ones will be in seventh heaven when hugging Cookie Monster - and you can take some photos that you'll treasure for years to come.
All in all, Philadelphia has so much to offer - especially for kids. When planning your next vacation with your kids - think Philly - and have fun! |
