A family ski vacation is the perfect get away from stress. That is if you plan for it accordingly. A vacation should be fun, a time to relax and get way from all the daily headaches of life. Start you vacation off right by booking all accommodations beforehand. Ensure what lift tickets are or are not included. Double check if any childcare is provided at the location if this is something you may need, and if pre-registration is needed. If lessons are going to be needed, also check on schedules, fees, and requirements. Also, because getting to you favorite ski area and realizing you forgot some essentials is never fun, ensure you are well packed for each member of the family
Do Not Forget Basics for Each Family Member
- Skis with poles or snowboard for each family member
- Helmets
- Any additional safety gear you or your children regularly wear on the slopes such as wrist guards
- Ski or snowboard boots
- Goggles or sunglasses
- Small wallet with change and identifying/contact information, (Each member of the family, especially the youngest, should have emergency contact information including their names and information on accommodations they are staying at, so that in case of emergency someone can quickly be reached)
- Cell phone for all but the youngest members
- Harness for the youngest members if you use one. They work especially nice for the little ones that are learning to get on and off lifts, not to mention the security they provide when used properly
- Gloves, including an extra pair for everyone, hats, mufflers, gaiters/neck warmers
- Hand warmers for inside gloves
- Locks for placing on baskets available at most lodges to store small items
- Jacket, ski pants, snowsuit, etc.
- Long underwear if you will be skiing in temperatures much colder than usual
- Sunscreen
- Winter boots for those times you will be outside enjoying the snow but not on the slopes, and a comfortable shoe for indoor play
- Socks, both for skiing/snowboarding and other outside activities
- At least one outfit suitable for a night out on the town, or if you will only be participating in family affairs, outfits for each family member suitable for dinners out in area restaurants
When packing, consider the average temperatures of where you will be staying. It is most likely best to pack clothing that can be worn in layers, so that it can be removed or added as needed.
In addition, depending on the lodge or hotel you will be staying at, you may want to pack items such as swimsuits, deck shoes, beach towels, etc., as many lodges have pools and spa areas. If you will be participating in any other activities, such as golf or tennis, also pack whatever items you will need for your own personal use.
A camera and video recorder should also be packed to snap some photos or footage of the great times you are all going to have. Then once you are back home and dealing with the daily stress of job and family, you can pull out those snapshots and reclaim some of the stress free time you enjoyed while on your family ski vacation.
