There are many, many things to do in Detroit. This article will give you more information on some of the more popular attractions.

To begin with, Detroit boasts several casinos on the riverfront. New within the past few years, the Greektown, Motor City and MGM Grand Casinos offer an exciting way to pass the time while in Detroit. The enormous buildings are well lit and have more than ample security, virtually guaranteeing travelers as well as locals an enjoyable time.

Also while in Detroit, you may be interested in walking through Rivertown. This is the eastern area along the waterfront, and it is home to the Renaissance Center (RenCen). The RenCen is home to offices, hotels, shops and restaurants. At the top of the RenCen, from either the revolving restaurant or the free viewing deck, you can take in a breathtaking view of the Great Lakes, as well as nearby Canada. 

Not far from the RenCen ¨C within walking distance - you can find Greektown. This eight-block section of the city is full of Greek restaurants, baklava bakeries, coffeehouses and ouzerias. 

A few miles north of downtown Detroit is the Cultural Center. This is a fabulous grouping of museums and galleries that are truly world-class. The Cultural Center is made up of the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Historical Museum, the Museum of African-American History, and the Detroit Science Center.

The collection in the Detroit Institute of Arts spans 5000 years, and showcases a four-wall mural by Diego Rivera called ¡°Detroit Industry¡±, which can be found in the interior garden court.

Only a couple doors away you can find the Detroit Historical Museum, and learn chronologically about the development of the auto industry in the ¡°Motor City¡±.

The Museum of African-American History is the world¡¯s largest African-American historical and cultural museum. Patrons can partake of exhibits, classes, a library and a theater.

The Detroit Science Center is dedicated to scientific enrichment, and features its own IMAX Theater.

Not actually in Detroit, but located in nearby Royal Oak, is the Detroit Zoo. Opened in 1928, the zoo was one of the first in the country to feature barless animal exhibits. To accomplish this, systems of moats and other natural barriers separate the animals from the zoo visitors. Recently, a breathtaking exhibit called the ¡°Arctic Ring of life¡± was opened, which features a Plexiglas underwater tunnel, which zoo patrons can walk through to see seals and polar bears swimming and playing above them. Over a million people visit the zoo every year.

Every Saturday in Detroit, on the outskirts of downtown, rain or shine, is a gigantic semi-covered farmer¡¯s market, known as Eastern Market. Here you can buy anything from goats to olive oil, and enjoy people watching and picnicking.

There are several festivals that lend themselves to an amazing Detroit experience. During the International Freedom Festival, a massive fireworks display is set off from the Detroit River. This festival is held in tandem with the city of Windsor in Canada, as a joint celebration of the 4th of July in America, and Canada¡¯s Dominion Day on July 1st.

The African World Festival is held the third weekend of August. There you can enjoy music, food and art along the Detroit riverfront.

In September, for 5 days, is held one of the country¡¯s most prestigious jazz festivals; the Montreux Detroit Jazz Festival. If you are in Detroit in time for this festival, make a point to stop in. You won¡¯t be disappointed.

While there is always something to do in Detroit, some times are better than others to visit. Winter in Detroit is typically quite cold, and summers can be unbelievably humid. Therefore, the most ideal times to come visit Detroit are spring and fall, before the weather gets too extreme.
