Vacation in the state of South Dakota to see the Corn Palace, Wall Drug Store, Badlands, Black Hills and Mount Rushmore.

When you plan your next summer vacation, consider the midwestern state of South Dakota.  The prairies and grasslands of South Dakota were once the land of the Sioux, who hunted the innumerable buffalo herds that roamed there.  Today, in the ¡°Mount Rushmore State¡±, a variety of beautiful national parks, dramatic mountain carvings, and beautiful rock formations await your visit.  Summer is the best season for visiting South Dakota in comfortable temperatures.  

Corn Palace

Mitchell, South Dakota, boasts of having the ¡°World¡¯s Only Corn Palace¡±.  Made of concrete, this unusual building¡¯s exterior of grain has been assembled and disassembled every year since 1892.  Each year, artists use corn, wheat, and other grains to construct murals depicting agriculture and other aspects of life in South Dakota.  These murals cover the inside and outside of the Corn Palace. Besides its function as a tourist attraction, the structure is also used to host shows and other events throughout the year.  The Corn Palace Festival is held over Labor Day weekend.  

Wall Drug Store

This unique store is located in Wall, South Dakota.  Wall Drug Store is a tourist attraction that has thousands of visitors each day.  The drug store began thriving after giving away free ice water to travelers during the Depression.  Intriguing highways signs advertising Wall Drug Store entice travelers to stop by and investigate.  When they arrive, they are enthralled by the many unusual and hard-to-find items, along with friendly service, and that free ice water.  At Wall Drug Store, you can find everything from stuffed Jackalopes to buffalo burgers.  You¡¯ll also find Black Hills Gold jewelry, Western wear, books, art, and much more. 

Badlands

The views of the Badlands are a sight you¡¯ll never forget.  You¡¯ll observe hilly and dramatic landscapes of eroding spires, buttes and other interesting rock formations.  Their layers have bands of colors that glow in the sun.  The Badland National Park has bison and Roberts Prairie Dog Town.  There is also a Fossil Trail showing replica fossils from the animals which inhabited the area.

Black Hills

Further west, a mountain range called the Black Hills towers over the plains.  Harney¡¯s Peak is the highest point, at an elevation of 7,242 feet.  The Black Hills kept many gold miners occupied in the nineteenth century.  The most famous mining town from that period is Deadwood, which you can still visit today for dining, shopping, and gambling.  The Black Hills region has national parks such as Custer State Park, which offers views of bison and other wildlife in their natural habitat.  

Mount Rushmore

Located 25 miles southwest of Rapid City, South Dakota, the faces of four U.S. presidents are carved into the granite mountainside of Mount Rushmore.  They are:  George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.  Sculptor Gutzon Borglum began his work on the faces in 1927. The sculpture took 14 years to carve at a cost of nearly $1 million.  There is a walking trail, museum, amphitheater, gift shop, bookstore, and a place to eat.  Don¡¯t miss the Evening Lighting Sculpture Ceremony each night at 9 p.m.
