As the fourth-largest South Pacific nation, New Caledonia consists of the main island, La Grande Terre, and five smaller islands.  The country¡¯s culture is a vibrant blend of French traditions and Melanesian customs.  While in the capital, Noum¨¦a, a visit to the Tjibaou Cultural Centre is a great way to learn about New Caledonia through its native exhibits and broad calendar of special events which include lectures and dances.  The center¡¯s building is also an interesting combination of modern and traditional architecture.  

New Caledonia has other interesting museums that are worth a visit. To learn more about the culture of both the native Kanak people and other cultures of Oceania, stop by the Noum¨¦a Museum.  Opened in 1971, the museum is dedicated to the ethnology and archaeology of the South Pacific region.  The collection also includes Melanesian huts and and ethno-botanic garden. The Maritime History Museum displays over forty pieces of wreckage salvaged from ships that ran aground off the island¡¯s shores.  While in Noum¨¦a, be sure to stop by the local produce market.  Held every day, the market offers an abundance of tropical fruits, garden vegetables, and fresh fish.

Located on a tiny island at the entrance to the world¡¯s largest lagoon, the Phare Amedee Lighthouse was constructed in France in 1861 and shipped to New Caledonia in 1865.  Following a climb up the 247 iron steps, visitors are rewarded with magnificent views of the island and surrounding lagoon.  A day-trip to the island of Amdee can include more than just a visit to the famous lighthouse.  The trip¡¯s options include a barrier reef cruise to feed reef sharks, traditional music and dancing, sarong tying, and snorkeling and diving.  Also available are children¡¯s activities and a marine life touch tank.

New Caledonia offers a great variety of ways to get around the islands.  Bicycles and busses are easily available, as are taxis and car rentals.  One of the most cost-effective ways of getting around Noum¨¦a, however, is Le Petit Train Touristique De Noum¨¦a.  With a different routes focused on the market, local flora and fauna, and cultural and historical sights, these colorful road trains are a unique and fun way to get around.

To explore more of New Caledonia¡¯s natural beauty, visit Parc Territorial de la Rivi¨¨re Bleue.  Filled with many walking paths and swimming holes, the park is also a great place to see the araucaria and kauri pine forests.  Be sure to see the giant Grand Kaori which is  estimated to be almost 1000 years old.  The park is home to the cagou, New Caledonia¡¯s national bird.  Once nearly extinct, the country¡¯s breeding and reintroduction program had helped the birds make a comeback.

New Caledonia naturally has many great opportunities for water activities.  From July to September, mating humpback whales can be seen in the lagoon.  Travelers who enjoy deep sea fishing can charter boats or catamarans for their pursuit of marlin and tuna.  Native outrigger pirogues, made of timber with inverted triangular sails, are a popular way to explore the waters off the Isle of Pines.  With its plentiful marine life, the islands are a wonderful place for scuba diving.  Visitors without any dive training may wish to try an underwater walk, a new twist on the old underwater diving helmets.
