There is nothing more comforting than the outdoors in Maine.  Sitting along a dock listening to the loons in the morning can bring tranquility to the most troubled of individuals.  But Maine isn¡¯t all about loons and moose, there are a lot of activities for everybody inside this northern vacationland.

In Kittery, Maine, just across the border from New Hampshire, you will find world class shopping at the Kittery Outlet Stores.  Here you will find everything from hard to find Pfaltzgraf pieces to fine Lennox china.  There is also a Trading Post to get outfitted for camping in the woods or hunting for that perfect rack of horns.

The national parks in Maine are perfect for the outdoor life we all dream about.  Acadia National Park is found on parts of Mount Desert Island, Isle du Haut, and Schoodic Peninsula.  These beautiful scenic drives and hiking trails bring you to the summit of Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the east coast of North America.  Additionally, there are public parks and campgrounds all along the coast of Maine that offer cabin rental, camper parking and places to pitch your tent and toss in your line.  

In Ellsworth, just south of Bangor, the Black Mansion sits majestically awaiting your visit.  It¡¯s often referred to as Maine¡¯s Mount Vernon because it is adapted to George Washington¡¯s homestead.  There are collections of china and furniture, a carriage house and a formal garden to visit.  Also south of Bangor, but north of Ellsworth is the tiny town of Bucksport.  Located on the Penobscot Bay at the opening of the Penobscot River, it was named after the witch hunter Jacob Buck.  Here you have a fabulous view of Fort Knox on nearby Verona Island.  Fort Knox was built to withstand the British invasion from New Brunswick and later used during the Civil War.  When metal became scarce during World War I, however, the fort was stripped of its guns to be melted down and used.

Bar Harbor is probably the best-known vacation spot in Maine.  With its acres of sandy beaches, lively nightlife, popular resorts and restaurants, this town is an attraction all on its own.  There are plenty of things to do in Bar Harbor, including a Garlic Festival in September.  If you¡¯re up for it, a ferry runs from Bar Harbor to Nova Scotia where more adventure awaits.  

The city of Portland remains one of the largest harbors in the United States and is a must visit on your itinerary.  The Wadsworth-Longfellow House was the home of poet Henry Wadsworth-Longfellow.  The home is a museum of items owned by the Wadsworth and Longfellow families.  Built in 1785 by Longfellow¡¯s grandfather, General Peleg Wadsworth, the three story brick house awaits your arrival.  Near Portland, on Cape Elizabeth is the Portland Head Light.  Built in 1791, it is one of the nation¡¯s oldest lighthouses and was one of four authorized by George Washington to be put into service.  

Maine¡¯s rural routes are a treasure trove of suggested attractions.  As you travel over the roads, signs pop out from every direction pointing you toward your next destination.  These signs offer everything from antiques, books, flea markets, and supper suggestions.  Following a sign could be an adventure all by itself as you travel over dirt and paved roads lined with shells and magnificent rocks.

While Maine¡¯s beaches and national parks are popular destinations, Maine offers skiing that is second to none.  The state¡¯s snow fall averages more than 200 inches per year and with its steep hills and deep valleys, Maine¡¯s ski season is a breathless ride.  With over seventeen ski resorts and a capacity of more than 500 trails, you have your option of downhill or cross country skiing.  These resorts offer fresh powder and short lift lines all season long.

Whether you¡¯re going for the lobster, beaches, museums, antiques or the skiing, Maine has enough to put the most stressed out individual at ease. You can rent a cabin along the water¡¯s edge, pitch your tent deep in the woods or find any one of the quaint bed and breakfast¡¯s that line the roads and shop to your heart¡¯s content.  Maine¡¯s view of the world is calm and you will appreciate being in this northern vacation land to take it all in.
