When the time comes to plan your next vacation, consider New Mexico 每 the Land of Enchantment. Filled with numerous attractions for the on-the-go tourist, this southwestern state has all the makings of a memorable holiday. If you*ve never visited New Mexico, here are some suggestions for highlights and attractions that will assist you in the preparation of your itinerary.
Santa Fe, New Mexico is home to the Loretto Chapel, with its famous 每 and mysterious 每 spiral staircase. Built to access the choir loft, towering 22 feet above the main floor, this puzzling staircase was constructed by an unknown man who appeared with a donkey and a toolbox, sometime between 1877 and 1881 每 and who promptly disappeared upon its completion. The design consists of two 360 turns and has no apparent means of support, nor does it contain any nails. Experts have been baffled by its integrity, as well as the identity of its owner, thus earning it the moniker of ※The Miraculous Staircase§. As it grew in popularity, this gorgeous monument to architectural genius was eventually showcased on ※Unsolved Mysteries,§ as well as in the movie, ※The Staircase§. Be sure to stop in at the chapel*s gift store, where you*ll find merchandise relating to the staircase, as well as a number of religious items.
Folks who are into spelunking will want to pay a visit to the Carlsbad Caverns National Park, in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Featuring both self-guided and ranger-guided tours, the caverns offer a great deal in the way of adventure, excitement and natural beauty. Staff members of the park caution that those who choose to enter the caves should be in good physical and mental condition, as the surroundings can be quite challenging. Park rangers offer guided tours of a number of caverns, including King*s Palace, Left Hand Tunnel, Slaughter Canyon Cave, Lower Cave, Spider Cave and Hall of the White Giant. Of these six, the most challenging is the White Giant, whose rugged terrain poses obstacles such as narrow passageways, slippery surfaces, ladder climbing and free climbing (by the end of the tour, you*ll be covered with dirt, so dress accordingly). The cave tours are approximately four hours in length and are not recommended for those who are claustrophobic or acrophobic. Sturdy shoes or hiking boots and four AA batteries are required in order to enter the caves. Also available on the premises are the Visitor Center, Cavern Bookstore, restaurants, gift shops, a kennel and a picnic area.

Special events are held on a regular basis, such as a balloon festival and ski-related events during the winter months.
While you*re in Albuquerque, be sure to take a ghost tour 每 led by a trained professional in the field of paranormal investigation. The Old Town Ghost Tour will lead you through alleys and out-of-the-way places in the dark of the night. Your guide will introduce you to tales of the most heinous crimes and their punishments, long-lost cemeteries and recordings that are believed to be the voices of those who have passed on from this life. Photographs of ghostly activity will be provided for your viewing by the Southwest Ghost Hunter*s Association. If you*re planning to visit from April through mid-December, tours are given every day except Sunday and Monday. For those who prefer the take a winter vacation, the tours are still offered from mid-December through the end of March, but only on a once-a-month basis. Since this is a walking tour, be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as the tour should last for approximately 90 minutes. Tour guides see this as more than a spooky evening attraction - they focus on actual ghostly activity that*s been linked to the area. Folks who are sensitive to this type of scenario should think twice before taking the tour.
Speaking of ghosts, you might also like to take a tour of Shakespeare Ghost Town, located in Lordsburg, New Mexico. This lengthy 每 two hour 每 walking tour will take you along a section of the Butterfield Trail and through the streets that saw Billy the Kid, The Clantons, John Ringo and other ne*er-do-wells. A wide variety of re-enactments are done on a regular basis, such as Death Over an Egg, Happy Bob Passes On and Death of a Government Contractor, as well as both day and nighttime gunfights. Tourists are encouraged to bring their cameras 每 there*s a lot to see, although there aren*t a lot of social amenities, such as food and beverages or a gift shop. Those who prefer to have lunch during the trip are asked to bring their own picnic, which can be eaten at one of the tables in the Dining Hall. Otherwise, you*ll have access to nothing more than cold well water.
