Houston, located in southeast Texas, is that state¡¯s largest city, and has a population of over two million.  Although Houston is known more as a business city, there are many attractions for the leisure traveler.  Two airports serve the city; Bush Intercontinental Airport is north of the city and Hobby Airport is on the south side.  The weather in Houston is hot and humid in summer and mild in winter.   Here are some things you might want to see while visiting Houston:

Theater District

Houston has a vibrant performing arts district in the downtown area; performances of ballet, opera, theater, and the symphony are held regularly.  Some performances are even free, such as those at Miller Outdoor Theater in Hermann Park.  Theater Under the Stars frequently premiers new musicals at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts.  The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, an amphitheater in The Woodlands, is the summer home for the Houston Symphony and is also a great place to see a rock concert.  

Museum District

Houston has museums to interest just about anyone.  Check out the Houston Museum of Natural Science, The Museum of Fine Arts, the Holocaust Museum, Contemporary Arts Museum, The Menil Collection, and Bayou Bend.  Many of the museums are located near the Houston Zoo and Rice University.

Sports

Houston has five professional sports teams, including baseball, football, hockey, and basketball, and three recently-built stadiums.  The Astros play baseball downtown in Minute Maid Park, and the Texans play football in Reliant Stadium, near the old Astrodome and Medical Center.  The Rockets and the Comets, Houston¡¯s women¡¯s team, play basketball in downtown¡¯s Toyota Center, and the Aeros play hockey there also.

Dining

There are many fine restaurants in Houston, with many types of cuisine represented.  The downtown Aquarium, on Bagby, features seafood and has a 150,000 gallon aquarium to entertain you while you wait for your meal.  Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen has several locations, as does Pappas Bros. Steakhouse and Pappasito¡¯s Cantina.  Ninfa¡¯s on Navigation is a good place to eat Mexican food, Benihana is fun for Japanese food, and for down-home cooking, try Treebeard¡¯s.   Jenni¡¯s Noodle House, on Jefferson, Josephine¡¯s for Italian, on Caroline St., and Ruggles, at Minute Maid Park, are good places to eat downtown.  

Shopping

Houston has many shopping centers and malls.  The Galleria has several major department stores, hundreds of smaller boutiques, an ice skating rink and restaurants and is located uptown.  Memorial City Mall, Town & Country Village, and Katy Mills are on the west side.  Rice Village, River Oaks Shopping Center, The Park Shops and Highland Village are located in the inner loop.  On the north side of Houston, Deerbrook Mall, Greenspoint Mall and Old Town Spring Shopping Village are shopping meccas.  If you like flea markets, visit the 600 merchants at Trader¡¯s Village, which is only open on weekends.

Port of Houston

Take a cruise along the port of Houston on the ¡°M/V Sam Houston.¡±  See international vessels, refineries, and other cargo operations along the Houston Ship Channel.  Stay inside the air conditioned lounge or go out to the rear deck of the boat for a better view.

Bayou Place

Bayou Place has restaurants, theaters and concerts all in one place and is located in the Theater District downtown at Smith and Texas Avenue.  See a performance at the Verizon Wireless Theater, catch a movie at the Angelika Film Center, or eat at The Hard Rock Caf¨¦, Sake Lounge, or Mingalone Italian Bar & Grill.
