San Diego is located in Southern California right near the U.S./Mexico border. It is known as the land of surf and sand. Whether you are on romantic getaway or a family vacation, there is no shortage of fun to be had. Following are some ideas for taking advantage of all San Diego has to offer.
Beaches. There are miles and miles of beaches in San Diego. Coronado beach is consistently selected as one of the best beaches to visit in America. Other popular beaches are Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach. Affectionately known to locals by ¡°PB¡± and ¡°OB¡±, these beaches boast plenty of restaurants, novelty shops and sunbathers. Most beaches offer bicycle rentals and surfing lessons.
Coronado Island. Coronado is a small island connected to San Diego by a tall bridge. It is one of the most expensive places to live in the United States and a great tourist location. In addition to the great beaches, Coronado Island houses the famed Hotel Del Coronado. Famous for its plush rooms, the Hotel Del Coronado is also known for Sunday brunch and high tea. Shops, restaurants, bars and coffee shops - all with a fabulous view of the ocean, surround the hotel.
The Zoo. The San Diego Zoo is one of the most famous zoos in the nation. It is also located in Balboa Park, which is a must see for most visitors. The 1,000 acre park is located in downtown San Diego and in addition to the zoo, it has 15 museums and various gardens. The zoo is a lovely setting for strolling around in the great San Diego weather. It hosts the typical zoo animals including, pandas, elephants, giraffes and apes.
Seaworld. Seaworld is located in the beautiful Mission Bay area of San Diego. It is one of the most beloved sea animal parks in the state. The most famous resident is Shamu, the killer whale. Shamu performs daily for the crowd, and the park even offers an opportunity to dine with the whale. Other animal highlights include polar bears, seals, penguins and sharks. The park also has numerous amusement rides, including the just opened Journey to Atlantis, a water ride with an eight-story drop.
Legoland. Legoland is located in Carlsbad, about 25 miles north of San Diego. It is an amusement park, where almost everything is made out of legos. A must see is Miniland, U.S.A. Here, there are replicas of Washington D.C., Florida, New England, New York City, New Orleans and California, all made out of more than 20 million lego bricks. Legoland is geared for kids aged 2 to 12, and offers numerous play lands and amusement rides for kids of all sizes.
Del Mar Racetrack. This historic and famous racetrack (Seabiscuit raced here), is located in Del Mar, about 15 miles north of downtown San Diego. The horseracing season runs from late July through early September. There are often special events such as family days, various contests and free concerts. The track is located right along the coast and also hosts the San Diego County Fair in June.
Gaslamp District. The Gaslamp District, located in downtown San Diego, is well known for its nightlife. In addition to bars and dance clubs, there are numerous restaurants and shops. It is a great place to visit day or night. |
