Often the primary draw to Florida, especially for families, turns out to be the Orlando area. This is a fabulous area to visit, but there are also many other perfectly delightful places to visit in Florida. Here are some things to do and places to see, from the east coast of this exciting peninsula to the west.
As mentioned, Orlando in central Florida, is often a top destination. This is where the Disney theme parks are located. Disney World, Epcot, Universal Studios, Disney MGM Studios, Sea World, and the other parks welcome many tourists each year. For the traveler not interested in the theme parks, however, there are many other things to do in the Orlando area.
International Drive in Orlando is where many of the hotels are located, but it is also a treasure chest of shopping, dining, and entertainment. One of the museums found here is Titanic, The Exhibition. It is located at the Mercado on International Drive. One of the most memorable parts of this attraction is that the visitor is given a "ticket" at the beginning, containing the name of a Titanic passenger. At the end of the tour, there is a huge wall with all the names of passengers, and it shows whether or not the person listed on the visitor's ticket survived the disaster in 1912. It is quite sobering to see the fate of the person the visitor is representing.
Ripley's Believe It Or Not is also found on International Drive. The Ripley's building itself is an "oddity." It is built in such a way that it appears that one end of the building is sinking into a sinkhole. Museum hours are extensive, with the doors opening at 9 a.m. and the last ticket being sold at midnight. The doors close at 1:00 a.m.
Found just 40 miles from Orlando, in Umatilla, Amazing Exotics offers one of the world's largest wildlife management facilities. They house more than 200 endangered animals on 85 acres. Tours must be arranged in advance, and range from the Discovery Tour to the Safari Adventure.
For a very different kind of adventure in the Orlando area, stop by the Kissimmee Airport and fly (with an instructor) a North American T-6 trainer from WWII fame at Warbird Adventures. This is the real plane, not a "ride" or simulator, the visitor takes the controls and flies the plane.
Also in central Florida is Silver Springs, "nature's theme park." The park covers 350 acres. Some of the attractions are the glass bottom boats, jeep safari, jungle cruise, and many animal attractions. Many concerts and special events are also planned here. Visitors should plan to see the new "Fantastic Fountains" water show.
Traveling east, the Atlantic Ocean side of Florida has many places of interest for the traveler, too. The first stop could be in northeastern Florida, at America's oldest city, St. Augustine. This delightful town was founded in 1565 and much of the ambiance of the town still has the feel of old Europe, starting with the cobblestoned shopping paradise of St. George Street with its overhanging balconies.
Things to do and see in St. Augustine are the Bridge of Lions; the St. Augustine Lighthouse; the beaches of Anastasia Island (the part of the town over the Bridge of Lions and separate from the historic district); and the Fountain of Youth Park, where the fountain of Ponce de Leon fame still offers drinks to the many visitors each year.
The architecture of St. Augustine is incredible, so be sure to take one of the trolley tours around the town and hear the drivers telling stories of the history of St. Augustine. Other things to see here are the Castillo de San Marcos, ("the old fort"); the Mission of Nombre de Dios, and many museums and restored villages.
Slightly south of St. Augustine the beginning of Florida's Space Coast. The visitor will find much to do in this area that covers more than seventy miles along the coast, even if only enjoying the beach areas. A stop that will provide an exciting day or part of a day is the Kennedy Space Center's Visitor Complex. There have been security changes since September 11, 2001, but the complex is still a fascinating place to visit.
Be sure to see the IMAX theaters, the rocket garden, shuttle replica, Apollo/Saturn V Center, and other exhibits and areas of interest to the space enthusiast. The Space Mirror is a memorial to astronauts who have given their lives in the interest of exploring space. The Space Center also offers a chance to meet an astronaut in their program called Astronaut Encounter.
A maximum access badge covers admission to the space center shows and exhibits, and also admission to the Astronaut Hall of Fame. Snack areas and restaurants are available within the Space Center.
The space coast offers things like a zoo, many shopping opportunities, museums, and even cruises to see the area. For a floating casino experience, Sterling Casino Lines offers two cruises daily and gives the guest Las Vegas style gaming on a cruise ship. The cruise lines are found at Cape Canaveral.
If the visitor to Florida would rather see the western part of the state and the Gulf of Mexico coast, a fun stop is Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay. This theme park is known for its great rides, shows, and a huge variety of animal attractions from African animals to bird gardens. Definitely plan a full day for visiting Busch Gardens. |
