When visiting Albuquerque, New Mexico, the biggest problem the visitor will have is deciding what to do first to begin their stay in this great city.

Albuquerque offers many mountain trips for the tourist who is seeking solitude in the beauty they offer. The Sandia Mountains are a great place to visit with an Aerial Tramway, a 2.7-mile ride that takes tourists from the bottom of Sandia Peak up to the 10,378-foot peak. The view this peak offers covers 15,000 square miles at times. At the top of the peak is a restaurant for the tourists who come hungry. Be sure to bring binoculars if riding this tramway as seeing wildlife such as bears and mule deer is not uncommon. Besides the ride in the tram and the sight seeing, from Mid-December to Mid-March skiers can enjoy 30 trails in the Cibola National Forest, complete with four chairlifts, a surface lift and a children¡¯s mitey mite. Also found in this ski area is a ski school, rental shop, caf¨¦, grill and ski shop. Also permitted on the mountains are hiking and bike riding. Like Sandia Mountains, Jemez Mountains offer scenic beauty with its canyons, springs and forests. Unlike Sandia Mountains, Jemez Mountains offer a trip into the past with some historical culture, and a little relaxation with hot springs. Other activities available here are cross-country skiing, hiking, camping and fishing.

Visit one of Albuquerque¡¯s National Monuments or one of the many Pueblos to learn about the history of this area. Petroglyph National Monument has three walking trails where visitors can see thousands of petroglyphs that hunting parties chipped into the walls. Coronado State Monument is home to the remains of Kuaua Pueblo. This Pueblo is thought to have been where Spanish explorer Coronado spent the winter of 1540-41. Indian Pueblo Cultural Center houses arts and crafts from the nineteen pueblos found throughout New Mexico and on weekends enjoy Indian dances. This Cultural Center offers an American-Indian restaurant, museum and gift shop. Take an hour-long tour through Acoma Pueblo, which is only an hour west of Albuquerque. Acoma Pueblo is one of the states most dramatic landmarks. A 17th century church is located at this pueblo. Jemez Pueblo located one hour northwest of Albuquerque. A visitor¡¯s center is available at this Pueblo with information concerning the Pueblo and the Jemez Mountain Trail attractions as well as a gift shop, museum and tours.

Albuquerque has five wineries and vineyards. The owners and staff pride themselves on making quality products and are very hospitable. Enjoy the wine tasting, stroll through the Fermentation Rooms, and walk the grounds of these fine wineries and vineyards. 

Albuquerque has many museums from geology to atomic energy to art and history. The National Atomic Museum has exhibits explaining the development of atomic energy and its use in weapons. This museum also touches on the latest advancements of research done on this energy. The University of New Mexico Museum of Geology and Meteorites has hundreds of exhibits covering minerals, meteorites, moon rocks and fossils. Albuquerque Museum of Art and History has permanent exhibits of the history of the city as well as traveling exhibits. New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science has eight permanent exhibit halls that takes the tourist on a journey in time from the formation of the universe to modern day with an emphasis on New Mexico. The most unusual museum that Albuquerque offers is the Rattlesnake Museum, a museum that specializes in snakes.

Zoos, aquariums and nature centers have not been left out in Albuquerque.  Walk through an eel cave and look at a 285,000-gallon shark tank at the Albuquerque Aquarium. Visitors also have the opportunity to learn more about aquatic habitats while looking at all the colorful fish. The division of the Rio Grande Zoological Park is so the visitor has the impression of where the animals originated. Visitors can observe animals located in an African Savannah, a tropical rain forest, a primate island, lobo woods, a birds of prey aviary and more. Rio Grande Nature Center State Park is a park preserve for the riverside wildlife the live in the cottonwood groves that line the Rio Grande. Learn about local ecology, geology and history and enjoy nature trails.

Art and Galleries abound tremendously in Albuquerque.  The art influences in this area are from African to Chilean, Russian to Polynesian. The treasures are found in stores through out Albuquerque are either imported or made locally.  Private galleries as well as cooperative galleries feature artists whose crafts include handblown glass, visionary art, sculpture, glass, jewelry, furniture, silk wearables, and weavings. The performing arts are important here also. There are theatres, a melodrama and the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra located here to entertain those who love to go to see the performing arts.

Sports and outdoor activities are very popular in Albuquerque. There is something for every visitor, whether watching or participating. The sports available include bowling, golf, horseback riding, rafting, skating, skiing, swimming, tennis, baseball and horseracing. Other outdoor activities available are air adventures, balloon rides, train rides, mountain climbing, and mountain biking. 

If shopping is on the itinerary then Albuquerque can answer that call also, whether shopping for antiques and furnishing, souvenirs and gifts, or the usual shopping in malls and department stores. Antiques, American and European, along with estate jewelry are found in several antique malls throughout Albuquerque. Old Town, a historic village complete with horse drawn carriages, is an excellent area to go shopping. Old Town has a variety of southwestern shops, restaurants and art galleries, making it the perfect shopping experience while visiting Albuquerque. 

Places to stay and places to eat are as plentiful as all the other attractions in this great city.  For a place to stay, the visitor will have to decide between bed and breakfast facilities, hotels/motels, campgrounds/ RV Parks, Hostels, Ranches/Resort/Retreats or Rentals/Guest Houses. Fine dining has just as many choices with  Japanese, Brazilian, German, Chinese, American, Cajun, Indian, Italian, Persian, French, Native American, Vietnamese, Greek, Korean and of course New Mexican cuisine available.
