Nova Scotia is the most populated and wealthiest of Canada¡¯s Atlantic Provinces which includes New Brunswick.  The French called it Arcadia and were the first settlers of the area.  Just a short ferry ride off of the Maine coastline is this beautiful land full of mountains, scenic beauty and historical sites.

Museums are the highlight of any trip to Nova Scotia.  The Alexander Graham Bell Museum stands in recognition of the inventor¡¯s greatest accomplishment, the telephone.  The actual telephone that was used on that fateful day sits majestically among his many other notable works.  The Provincial Museum in Halifax holds an array of artifacts from prehistory to the present are displayed proudly as a symbol of Nova Scotia¡¯s advances.  The museum also maintains a series of historic houses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.  

The wonderfully sheltered coves bred fishing villages as old as the island themselves.  Peggy¡¯s Cove, near Halifax, is the most picturesque of the fishing villages.  Lunenburg joins the past of a fishing village with unique wooden buildings dating back to the 19th century.  The Fundy tides, a gorgeous act of Mother Nature, can be best seen in the Cumberland and Minas basins.  

Most of the island is dedicated to historic parks that focus on the scenery and beauty of Nova Scotia.  Fort Anne National Historic Park in Annapolis Royal is the site of a French fort built to protect early settlers.  Fortress of Louisbourg National Historical Park on Cape Breton is a reproduction of a 18th century French town and naval base.  Grand Pre National Historic Park in the Annapolis Valley marks the area of the main Acadian settlements and was the setting of a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. 

Finally, move further away from the mainland onto Cape Breton Island.  This part of Nova Scotia is very rugged and in can be mountainous.  The tablelands, or flat-topped mountains, rise directly out of the sea to heights of more than 1,000 feet.  The highest point in the province is North Barren and is a wonderful hike to the top.  The Bras d¡¯Or Lakes sit in the center of the island and are part of the Atlantic Ocean. 

Nova Scotia¡¯s residents celebrate year round with festivals and events to entertain the largest to smallest visitors.  In October, the people of Kentville celebrate the Pumpkin People Festival while over in Dartmouth Halloween at Helen¡¯s House is a tradition not to be missed.  From April until late October, the Shore Club hosts dances while a Port of Wines Festival is held in Halifax.  For the car lover in your group, check out the Show & Shine Car Show in July.  This annual event is held in conjunction with the Canada Day celebrations and is a keeper on the things to do list.  This celebration has a child¡¯s parade, fairgrounds, music and fireworks.  Tattoo doesn¡¯t just mean ink; it means a beat in Halifax.  The Nova Scotia International Tattoo, a fife and drum competition is held in July and has more than 2,000 performers from around the globe.

So whether you¡¯re searching out Nova Scotia¡¯s rich history or climbing its high peaks, this beautiful land is begging for rediscoveries.  The residents have plenty to celebrate and the visitors do too.  Beautiful sunrises and sunsets on any one of this beautiful island¡¯s beaches will reignite the romance or provide a wonderful backdrop for any honeymoon.
