Sacramento, California is a popular visitors¡¯ spot today, but this city¡¯s popularity dates back to the mid-1800s when people from all over the country and the world rushed to Sacramento in search of gold. While there is still plenty of history to be found in this beautiful valley city, visitors, whether young or old, can find many interesting and exciting attractions and activities to explore. 

There is so much to see and do in California¡¯s capital, and some of the attractions, such as touring the capitol building, are free or only charge a small fee. Allow yourself time to tour the streets of Sacramento by taking a leisurely walk or drive and gazing at the lovely Victorian homes located from 7th to 16th streets, from E to I streets. While you are in the Old Sacramento Historic District, be sure to visit the visitors¡¯ center, where you can pick up self-guided walking tour maps. The California State Railroad Museum offers interesting historical exhibits, also.

You can receive free admission into the B. F. Hastings Building, which was the site of the first California State Supreme Court and housed the terminal for the Pony Express. Nearby stands a monument of the Pony Express. Stroll through the Historic City Cemetery that dates back to 1849. You can also see the twenty-two black granite engraved panels of the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial. 

Visit historic Chinatown-Sacramento Yeefow in downtown. Stroll past St. Paul¡¯s Episcopal Church to see the beautiful stained glass windows. You can arrange for a free guided tour of the Port of Sacramento. This port is at the heart of Sacramento¡¯s industrial and agricultural commerce. 

Children love to visit Fairytale Town and watch the innovative plays that are performed there. They can see live animals and explore the learning gardens all for a small fee. Head to the Sacramento Zoo to see the red pandas and over 400 other animals. Young and old love to take a ride in the River Otter Water Taxi on the Sacramento River.  You can also see the river from a different vantage point by hopping on board the Sacramento River train. This train travels over the longest wooden train trestle in the west as it rambles along its 28 mile route. Sacramento Southern Railroad Excursions offers a 40-minute train ride pulled by a steam locomotive along the Sacramento River.

Nearby Six Flags Marine World offers plenty of thrill rides along with beautiful and fascinating wildlife. It is the best of both worlds! If you want more thrills, visit some of the nearby whitewater rafting outfitters for an exciting half or full day trip. Trips up to three days are also offered. 

Sacramento¡¯s earliest settlement has been reproduced in Sutter¡¯s Fork State Historic Park. John Sutter founded the settlement in 1839, and visitors can experience life in the past by walking through the exhibits. Gibson Ranch Park offers guided horseback riding adventures and pony rides. 

Be sure and rest your tired feet by enjoying the state of the art Esquire IMAX Theater, and then take a drive through the farming area of Apple Hill. Stop along the way and sample the fresh produce and baked goods that many of these farms offer for sale. You can even pick your own fruits and vegetables! Napa Valley and Shenandoah Valley wineries and vineyards are just a short scenic drive away from Sacramento. 

Sacramento offers a wide variety of restaurant cuisine. You can enjoy every type of food from Cajun to Indian. There are numerous restaurants, cafes, and pubs in the area. If nightlife is what you are looking for, Sacramento offers live entertainment, comedy clubs, and sports bars. Visit the beautiful city of Sacramento for the vacation of a lifetime!
