Exciting Norway is sometimes called the Land of the Midnight Sun. Most of us remember learning that fact in school. We also have thoughts of Vikings in their Longships, and visions of trolls come to mind when thinking of Norway. It would be difficult to visit a gift shop of all things Norwegian and not find an assortment of trolls that want to go home with tourists.
Fairy tales from Norway are the theme of Hunderfossen Amusement Park in the town of Lillehammer. There is a fairy tale castle filled with characters from those tales, and with trolls. Guarding the entrance to this wonderland is what is said to be the world's largest troll. There are more than fifty things to do here including a wax museum and swimming pool, games, water park, and a fairy tale cave as well as many other attractions.
Another activity to check out in Lillehammer is the fabulous skiing. There are many slopes here as well as other winter sports facilities. The Winter Olympics of 1994 were held here and the slopes are among the finest to be found in Europe and elsewhere. Whatever kinds of winter sports interest a visitor, chances are that places to enjoy it will be found all over Norway.
Lillehammer is where to find the most extensive open air museum (historical village) in Europe. Here the visitor will find more than a hundred and fifty buildings housing tens of thousands of artifacts. This is just one of the many museums in Lillehammer, so be sure to check ahead and know exactly which ones you will enjoy visiting.
More than half a million people call Norway's capital city, Oslo, home. There are always many things for visitors to do in Oslo including some fine art galleries, specialty museums, and regular museums. There is even a museum all about Viking ships.
Vigeland Park and Museum displays the sculptures of Gustav Vigeland. Vigeland agreed to give all of his works of art to the city of Oslo in 1921. There are more than one hundred and ninety of his sculptures found here. This is a great place to relax and slow your pace a bit and it is found in the "Frognerparken" park.
The Norwegian Folk Museum in Oslo is an open air museum of more than one hundred and fifty buildings from Norway's past. This includes the Gol Stave Church from the 1400s. Many special activities take place here, but especially during the summer months. Some indoor exhibits are found here as well, and if you are visiting in December, the Great Annual Christmas Fair occurs each Sunday in the month. Most of the buildings here are from the 1600s and 1700s, but some, as the church already mentioned, are older. Costumed guides show visitors what life was like in Norway's past in this living history museum.
While in Oslo, be sure to stop by the Akershus Slott & Festning. This medieval castle was built at the beginning of the 14th century and is one of the strongest fortresses in Europe. Walk through the castle and let your imagination go back to the time when this was home for medieval nobles. There is a changing of the guard every day and often plays and concerts are performed on the Akershus grounds.
An excellent place to shop and grab something to eat at a cafe while in Oslo is Karl Johans Street. Musicians and vendors selling all kinds of goods are found here during the summer months. For the nightlife in the city, try the "Latin Quarter" section of Oslo.
If your travels take you to Bergen, Norway, a trip to the Hanseatic Museum will show visitors what the town was like in its trading days of the 1700s. Another stop in this town should be the 12th century church of St. Mary. The architecture is incredible and quite spectacular.
A breathtaking view is found in Bergen at the top of Mount Floyen. You will be riding the Funicular to the top. The Funicular is a railway-type of car that will be your transportation. Check ahead of your trip to see if it will be running during the month that you will be visiting the area. You may want to consider riding to the top and then hiking back down.
The Flam Railway in Bergen offers a beautiful scenic railroad ride for tourists. The train ride starts at the Bergen Railway and travels to the Aurlandfjord. You will be traveling through the Flam Valley and there are twenty tunnels and many gorgeous views along this route.
The Bergen Aquarium delights many visitors every year. This huge collection of marine life, both saltwater and freshwater, houses fish from all the corners of the earth. There are more than fifty tanks found here and outdoor pools for the penguins and seals.
No matter what time of year your trip to Norway will be taking place, it is a country that is sure to offer activities for any and all visitors to enjoy. |
